Detoxing - who's done it?

Detoxing is nonsense. Everyday I go to the toilet and take a big dump. That's my body detoxing itself.

claimjuice, "but surely"? You're making an assumption without providing any evidence. No, food DOESN'T surely damage your body in some manner. So what the hell are you talking about?

as are you making an assumption with no evidence. To say that all food is good for you and wont overwork your organs would mean that everyone would be healthy. So lets see some of your evidence on how all food is good and that there is no point in eating foods or herbs that can aid your body in digestion and improve your immune system.

and no where did i say that detox kits were a good or useful. The proper foods vitamins minerals and if needed herbs can help bring back your body to its healthy self.

I don't know if people should necessarily detox, given that our bodies do recover from alot of stress.
However, exposure to a lot of toxins does tend to compromise the functioning of the overall healthy balance. In this case we do need to try to consistently make healthy lifestyle choices...

Two quick examples of real toxic sources:
- The toxic load of car exhaust and other industrial emmissions.
- Most seafood that people eat is contaminated with dioxin, mercury, PCB, or all of the above.

Unless you live in Patagonia or some other far off land, you do have to contend with the toxins of civilization.

clamjuice, now you're talking about aiding digestion and improving the immune system instead of toxins. What happened to the toxins? Where are they, what foods are they in, what are they called, how do they cause toxicity?

Quetzal, car exhaust doesn't bioaccumulate. (unless it's exhaust from a car running on leaded gasoline!)

As far as lead, mercury, PCB, etc. those do all bioaccumulate, but none of these "detox" methods, doctrines, programs, kits, etc. mention anything about these bioaccumulative toxins nor do these detox reigmens have any viable chemical mechanism that could remove them from the body. Chelation therapy on the other hand is an "alternative medicine" type therapy that while very suspect, actually comes with an explanation of how it removes lead and mercury. Chelation therapy involves a lot of multi-hour sessions with an IV drip of EDTA stuck in your arm. You can't drink herbal tea to chelate the toxic metals from your brain tissue.

True, in most stable countries you don't have to worry about car exhaust, but in Sub-Saharan Africa it is (or should be) a concern, as leaded gasoline is still used.

I still think the best you can do is support your body is by eating healthy. A quick detox diet won't protect you for the long term.

And I do agree, if you have heavy metal poisoning, you really don't have many options.

clamjuice, please cite SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. Like chemical names and stuff, ya know?

That page you linked to is content written for elementary school children. There's not even a single reference in the document.

I already said i didnt not know any of the specifics, if you read a previous post you will see this.

But i dont see you providing any evidence to suggest that detoxing is false. I also never said a one week detox is possible. To me a detox is bringing your body to good health improving all of its functions, the only way being a better diet.

So lets see something that PROVES detoxing is false.

Why are you so hostile?

Because you're working backwards. In the universe we live in, nothing is true until it's been proven true. Things are false BY DEFAULT. There's never any way to prove things don't exist. Let's see anyone PROVE that God isn't real. (ps. he's not, but you will never be able to PROVE a negative claim!)

I see where you are coming from, but how can you say something is false if no research has been done.

People believed that the earth was flat. Research proved that false. You cant say something is false or positive until research has been conducted.

I know that the 7 day detoxer has done something rather than being a waste of time - my body is functioning fantastically since doing it. I go to the toilet really regular now, I am still eating well - but letting myself eat meats etc again of course and I am still losing weight. I feel generally fantastic! Usually when I try to lose weight I get ill - the flu or something. I seriously do feel like, in my self that all the crap has been flushed out.

My skin is clear and so are my eyes.

Because I am not over weight, I generally struggle to lose weight. When I exercise I muscle up very quickly so I am going the healthy eating, healthy diet option before i start a hectic workout again, which hasn't worked in the past but it is now because all the crap has been flushed out to give my body a decent chance to trim down. (also I have pulled a muscle in my leg so cant work out for the time being anyways) but it doesn't matter -

I will do this again in a years time.

I think self experience on something rather than what the reports may say is good way to tell if it bullshit or not. Face it, it wouldn't have been so highly recommended to me if it was bullshit.

There was a comment made earlier by someone that the weight you lose from detoxing comes back on afterwards PLUS more - that only happens if you go back to eating crap again. If you maintain your healthy eating and slowly each day after you have finished detoxing introduce yourself to some meat, then milk then some cheese, and then eat them all in a healthy mindful way you will NOT gain the weight plus more. As I said, I am still losing it. Plus I have heaps of energy.

I have a feeling that all the stress you put yourself into while "detoxing" would actually cause the body to produce its OWN toxins (ie. stress hormones).

*shrug*

Meh, when I think back to what I went through now it isn't really that bad. It was well worth it.

All the pains only really last the first half of the week - not the whole week.

I talked to my nutritionist today and mentioned some people thought it was a myth and she laughed at me.

She said we should all be detoxing twice a year. There are many many different typed of detoxing. She said that you can go in and get your blood examined and according to what they find they can tailor one that will rid your body of whatever they find, metals, parasites, pesticides etc. The toxins come from your environment. So seeing as how we all reside in different environments one kit would not be good for everyone.

So i still have to side with her, although i never doubted that it was a waste of time.

Ok well I'll go by my personal experience then .. so yep, my opinion remains. It was worth it and not bullshit.

Uh. Your personal experiences mean absolutely nothing when it comes to this. Do you know what placebo effect is? Your belief in the effectiveness of a cure works BETTER than most mainstream or prescription drug cures, even if all you're doing is eating sugar pills.

To then say that sugar pills work is fucking retarded.

When someone makes a living by selling you goods and services, and you come to them saying that someone you know said their goods and/or services are bullshit, do you honestly think they are going to tell you the truth? No, they're going to feed you a line of sales and marketing hogwash and have a derisive attitude towards the skeptics. You already believe them because you've given them your money in the past so you just take what they say at face value instead of realizing that they're screwing you out of money like every other fucking industry where people are employed trying to sell you things.

If someone tells you they have specialized knowledge about the way the world works, and they'll use their knowledge to help you for a price, then they're fucking scammers. Also known as merchants or salesmen or vendors or marketers. Everyone selling you things is lying to you.
