Desert island Discs/Drugs

You're too kind Brimz. Now I can take the entire collection of big-haired 80s soft porn mags - Whitehouse, Fiesta and the lot.

Erm... I mean I can take the entire Burroughs collection of course.

As a Desert is bound to be hot and dusty the drug is beer.

As the rest of ye chase an ever decreasing opiate buzz on your islands, just about or not managing to stay well as veins become more elusive, I will having a cold one at the beach bar.

It's a desert island, you can choose beer as a drug but it doesn't come with a bar.

If there was an option like that I would choose the bar (provided it came with the barmaid). But since it doesn't I'll stick with the ketamine and go psychonaut on my island adventures.

I didn't take any works with me as the Heroin would be of the highest quality .

Also theirs bound to be plenty of fruit growing to help with the constipation !

I agree , hence i thought it would be a good idea to take something i have yet to read .

I'm pretty sure on the radio 4 version you get the Bible so i'm a change that n give you all a copy of the GooD Book8(

Yeah I'm pretty sure you get the bible as a given, bit rough if your a Muslim, I'm not sure if they allow the Qur'an as an alternative as its something I'd really like to read. maybe be we should just rule out religious books and take it a given you can have those.

Actually just checked mid post:-

they are automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work.

Wow - I can't imagine that, to me it would be like someone saying 'I never listen to music'.. have you ever tried audiobooks, if there's a physical reason why you don't read?

Nope, no physical reason. I love reading documents & information on a variety of subjects but I've just never read a book from start to finish.
A few years ago I read half of Shane MacGowan's autobiograhpy 'A Drink with Shane MacGowan' but lost interest half way through.

Someone, equally as suprised as yourself, once said to me "I do books like you do drugs!", during a conversation about what happens when someone reads a book (i.e. after a while they don't see the words etc.)

As for audiobooks, my brother-in-law bought me 2 to help me sleep after my son died but I never listened to them.

Some day I will read a book from start to finish. Just have to find the right one! :)

This has never happened to me except with some of the Peanuts cartoons, and I've read several books all the way through! I tend to think it's a metaphor, although I do find myself visualising the events and places described in books. If anyone really does cease to see the words while reading please speak up and be counted!

Acid, I don't read either apart from technical manuals and the like, I don't have the attention span or inclination, but I listen to audio books all the time, Bittorrent is your friend;)

I tend to listen them mainly when in the car, on the train or walking the dog, its important that the person reading is good at it so I'd go for the proper ones rather than the ammeter version you can get from Libribox.

Jack Kerouac - On the Road - Is one of my favs as well as all Philip K Dick and so many more, audio books have opened up a world I would otherwise not be able to access

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense
GZA - Liquid Swords
Big Audio Dynamite - This Is B.A.D

(will come back to book)

Caffeine

I'm still pondering my choices.. Inevitably, I'll be the Desert Islander that gets no choice of book, music or drugs because procrastination, indecisiveness and ADD meant I didn't get the form in on time. :\

'Umm think! think!...drugs, book, mu.. Ooh something shiny over there!' < < what I do

'Concentrate! Umm, drugs, music, boo.. How the fuck does someone fuck a crab?'

lawdy. just FUCK the rules, like you do with your TV licence =D

make a list of whatever you want to take with you, and just fucking take it. end of

hide it in your cooch/knickers/whutever.

you may get it confiscated, or you might get away with it, but why restrict yourself? the penalties in this case are meaningless

do what thou will and be your own law while it harms no-one

hoe noes!
*cue stringent & 'reactive' legislation from the Brimster*

Ive never had a TV licence so have never pondered having sex with it.

Why do people keep quoting Aleister Crowley at me? Its like some contemporary mantra.
If we all 'do as we wilt' we wilt all be fucked!

Thank fuck Im off to my island! There will be no libertarian, satanic, hedonist,Crowley types in my little paradise and the crabs are all going to be wearing big knickers.

Mind you give credit where credit is due. Crowleys Own Will Rule #4 I musteth wear a marraca on my dick every morning
is class!

that wasn't a crowley quote. that was my own. crowley possibly wouldn't give a hoot about harming others. however that's purely hypothesising on my part, based on the common perception of him ... just for the sake of relativity, since that's what you also seem to be doing.

anyhoo ... enjoy your island of four walls <3

[edit]and you missed out the intrinsic and most relevant point I included as a necessary accompaniment to a 'do as thou will' ideology. it's kinda important. most important, in fact

Its a variation of Crowleys ethical law ' "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law'. So is it Crowleys quote or yours?
Your will or Crowleys?

Its like a mantra thats emerged in the collective the last few years.

you can answer that yourself, by going back an rereading my post. I'm assuming you just found that quote above from Crowleys works? so that's probably Crowley?

it's not a quote of mine [the 'whole of the law' one]. and if you want a history of where I got my 'do as thou will, as long as it harms no-one' take on things, it came from a great-aunt, who gave me a place to live when I moved from ma and pa's age 16. she was a pretty serious, and practicing roman catholic.

hmn. not sure what the 'collective' is. 'collectively' having a differing life ideology to your own, maybe? ... collective isn't a useful term i dont think. although I can see why it may be convenient.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_consciousness Its Emile Durkheim.. Jung refers to it quite a bit too.. He implied that we share a collective pool of unconscious mind that impacts our choices individually and as a society.

Your Aunt sounds like a nice lady. Shes not here to explain what she meant by ' Do as you will..' I imagine there
was some conflict for her with the part of the Lords prayer that says ' your will be done'. I know Ive walked a lifelong tightrope between libertarianism ( do what I will) and Legalism ( do what the Bible/law says)

Ive never had an issue with anyone having a differing life idealogy to my own. :)
