Ok so ive read around here alot and on other sites . I find many bluelighters saying that they often find themselves depressed after smoking weed .

But then you get other people saying that it does wonders for their depression .

For me , marijuana helps with my depression . When i smoke, it helps me forget all my problems and i just dont care about them when im high. Weed also makes me feel more content than usual and i no longer feel i need certain things like electronics, money , etc .

And my question to you guys is does marijuana make you feel depressed ? or does it help you overcome depression ?

And also if anyone could explain if marijuana affects dopamine or serotonin ? because this could be a big factor related to depression

thanks guys

It affects dopamine and it also acts as a great anti-depressant to me as well.

It's very subjective. Individual brain chemistries have different reactions to the effects of marijuana. In my circle of friends alone I know 3 of them who say that when they're depressed, pot totally gets them out of it and has them doing stuff and enjoying life and 3 who say that it makes them more depressed, anxious, facilitates panic attacks, etc.

Marijuana has many constituents that affect many systems in the brain, among them serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and GABA.

Usually it works as an anti-depressant for me. Sometimes it makes me think about negative aspects of my life but it never really gets me depressed about it, more of an eye opener to what I could change.

It works as a good anti depressant for me but I find that it worsens my social anxiety .

Also what's all this about weed acting on dopamine !?!?!?! Is that why you always feel unmotivated , lazy and tired after weed Because of the way it stimulates dopamine ?

oath man, im a daily smoker, only in my teens but to be honest i have never gotten *more/or depressed off smoking weed. really does do wonders.

"Weed also makes me feel more content than usual and i no longer feel i need certain things like electronics, money , etc ."
agreed..

I'm just at the point where pot makes me feel normal from quite some time of daily and relatively continuous use throughout each day (about 5-6 years now), so this question certainly has me thinking. My life has changed so much that I'm not sure if pot is an antidepressant the way my beloved SSRI citalopram is, I think it's just become too integrated in my life --- I feel better when I smoke but after this long of abuse I feel as if the psychological addiction might be canceling out any real overall positive qualities I get from it.

sigh 8)

And motivation and yes that's what I mean .... and I'm saying if weed stimulates dopamine While your high, then this could explain why weed makes me unmotivated , unable to study an learn ,etc on the comedown of the drug eh ?
Because the dopamine has just been stimulated , so after that it needs some time to recooperate .

Do all strains affect dopamine ? Or would it be more sativa dominant strains Due to it's energetic high?

...when they're depressed, pot totally gets them out of it and has them doing stuff and enjoying life...

I totally agree with this one. Sativa grows naturally here in this tropical country. That's probably a factor in the stimulant effect. It also cools my body just a little so the hot climate only feels warm.

With all due respect to the OP and the responders. It depends on your brain, your
enviroment and the strain.

I do not think it can be pinned down in the contex of the question.

Peace

^ so is that why alot of smokers feel a "burnout" after smoking weed and being high ? Cause of the way dopamine is stimulated ?

Anti-depressant is not the opposite of depressant. Weed generally slows me down and makes me happy at the same time.

I'm not sure he's talking about it being a depressant in the realm of depressants/stimulants, but more to the question of whether it makes you depressed emotionally or whether it lightens your mood.

To me, it's neither a depressent nor anti-depressent (in the emotional sense). Weed makes me think about things a lot more (mostly inward stuff about myself) and sometimes I get into good thoughts, sometimes bad ones... but it's never really depressing, just eye-opening, like a different perspective. Obviously my general mood is elevated, otherwise I wouldn't smoke, but it's not something I use to mask or escape depression.. I think my mental health would be relatively the same whether I smoked or not.
