I'm so bitter,
I cant believe the shit we do.
A women leaves her new born baby in a dumpster,
A man flies a plane into a building.
A father strangles his son.
A priest molests his faithful follower, a 10 year old boy who doesnt know why it feels so wrong.
A teenager takes a gun to school and kills everyone who ever did him wrong. Never giving them the chance to change.
A girl takes the heart of her loving boyfriend and steps on it by sleeping with his best friend.
It cant get better because everything is getting so worse. I have little faith in the human race, and I really am ashamed to be born a human. I sometimes wish I could be a tiger, where I would only kill to survive and wouldnt burden the world with such sad news. Or a bird who will just fly around in the skies before we blacken them with pollution. Or a whale to swim the oceans before we trash them with litter. Or a penguin who can slide around on the glaciers before we melt them.
"Sometimes the surest sign of intelligent life is that none have tried to contact us."
Calvin, From Calvin and Hobbes.

Make your corner of the world what you want it to be, and help where and when you can darling. It's the best any of us can do. At least the fact that you are so angry is a good sign that you are one of the best that the human race has to offer. :)

i know what you mean sweetie.... the world is crumbling around us. i had a long conversation with my ex-roommate around the time of the WTC bombing. he said he thinks the world will not end by some massive force of nature; rather that man will use his intelligence to kill himself off. the world will just fight and fight until there is no one left. its really sad.
but i try to look at the world in a different perspective... look at NYC now.. look how America really came together for each other. it's so amazing. even though it took a tragedy to do it. and look at all the good there STILL is in the world... it's there if you just look hard enough. there will always be good people in the world. its just that they are sometimes outnumbered by the bad people.
thanks for bringing up this issue.

Unfortunately, the media has a propensity to publicize only the negative aspects of the human race. What gives us our humanity is the capacity for both the very evil and the very good. An individual has the freedom to choose his path; it would be unfair to equate his morals and values with another person or group. Some of the examples you mentioned are actually exceptions to the rule.
There are an innumerable amount of legitimately good parents.
There are priests that sacrifice their livelyhood to truly help others.
There are those (such as Peace Corp, etc) that spend a great deal of time/money to help those who are less fortunate.
There *are* good people out there...you don't have to look farther than your closest friends.
Like Dagny pointed out; even the smallest actions by a single person can make a difference.

The media IS a negative aspect of humanity..
I was standing in line in the supermarket, reading the headlines on the tabloids and nearly everyone was about Prince Harry doing drugs and drinking.. I know that compared to most of the problems in the world, his aren't that bad, but for a minute there it made me want to puke that there are people willing to humiliate someone so young on a world-wide scale, and that there are enough people out there wanting to read about it to make it profitable. At that moment I swore I would never buy a trashy magazine again, nothing that deals in rumours and lies and shame.
There are lots of beautiful things in this world too but.. some days you just feel like crying.

ditto to what Dags said - she always knows the right things to say. :)
and Evan the fact that you care and are pissed about it means you are better than some people out there. now take action and make a change!!! things will never get better unless there are people willing to fight for what they believe in rather than sit back and complain. even just living your own life as an example is taking action. besides, even the smallest things can help. :)
well written though.

"and pray that theres intelegent life
somewhere out in space
coz theres bugger all down here on earth"-monty python
I dont like being the one to say this but i promised myself a little while ago that I wouldnt keep things to myself anymore so here it is....sadly it doesnt matter what we do to this world, or each other.this world will die one day, wether its destroyed by us or an asteroid or by our sun going supernova.and we dont matter either, were all gonna die,in five hundred years noone will even remember that we existed at all.all that really matters is that you worry about your life,if it makes you happy to stress about the world go for it but if it doesnt then dont stress coz one day we wont exist, the world wont exist and nothing that we did that was "good" or "bad" will matter. I know it sounds like this is just some way of passing off responsibility but it isnt, the only responsibility I have is to myself and those I love,I love this world and so I dont ever hurt it but its other peoples place to realise that what theyre doing is "wrong",you cant change them.
I renounced my place in the human race a long time ago,now the only race I belong to is me.

Nobody needs anyone
They don't even just pretend
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it

I'm with mella..you CAN change people sometimes. It's not going to happen overnight, but people are always changing, and sometimes the little push you make might send them in the direction you want to go. Don't ever think your ideals do not matter, or that your visions for the future are any less important than the jones' down the street.
And I know this isn't exactly what you were looking for, but it is important to realize that some of the problems you presented do happen in the animal world. Children are abandoned or killed, there is infidelity. We though, have elevated ourselves to a level above that of "animals" but then fail to provide the services, the follow through to make this possible all the time in our actions.
