Demerol dosage

Can someone tell me what a good oral dosage of demerol is? There's not much on the net about this... I understand it's considerably weaker when taken orally...

Well, there are a number of variables to consider. First off, if you've never had Demerol before, a lower dose may work better for you than it will for someone who's used to this drug. Your size may also be a factor. For example, a 200 pound person may need a higher dose to experience the same results as a 100 pound person. But again, tolerance may come into play: For example, I'm a 5'1" woman, 102 pounds with a long history of surgery and medical problems, including migraine headaches which I get about twice monthly, and for which I get Demerol injections (IM). For me, 100 mg injected will give me a bit of a nice buzz, but if I add a 50 mg pill (orally), I'm "doin' just fine, thank you!"). On the other hand, if I take only pills, I need at least 150-200 mg. My husband, who's 6' tall and weighs close to 200 pounds, is knocked flat on his ass with a 50 mg pill. He's in good health, only one surgery in the past.
It takes about 45-60 minutes from the time of injestion of pills to feel the effects so, whatever dosage you take, make sure you wait that long to see whether or not you need more. Intra-muscular injections of liquid Demerol do give you a more intense sensation; it takes about 20 minutes to begin feeling the effects. Effects last from 2 to 4 hours. Intravenous injections go directly into your bloodstream so you would need a lower dose than if you were having your Demerol orally or intramuscular. Effects are apparent very quickly but do not last as long.
Do NOT combine with alcohol or any other downer; could be very deadly. You may have some nausea (as with any opiate) and possibly vomiting. Best to have a light and nutritious small meal perhaps 3 or 4 hours prior). I read a lot about people having itching; for some strange reason, it's just my nose that itches ! (my husband can always tell when it's kicking in because I frantically start rubbing my nose!). Go to Erowid, plants and drugs, opiates, for more info.

Great, thanks a lot. I'll gradually step up dosage-wise. Do you have any experience with meprozine which contains both demerol and promethazine? Not sure if the second active will affect the dosage.

Hmm, so it's one of the synergistic combos they IV in hospitals that end up putting you out? :/ The pills are 100mg each of meperidine, I'm thinking I can get enough of it not to let the other ingredient knock me out too bad. Tranquilizers have very little effect on me from my experience.

This I haven't been able to find out yet unfortunately. The highest pills containing it have 50mg each I've heard. Some contain as low as 12, maybe lower. Hopefully since it's not the primary active it's a relatively low amount. It's called meprozine, I haven't been able to find a lot of info on the net.

50mg sounds like a rather high dose. All the promethazine(Phenergan, right?) seen comes in 10mg tablets, with 1-2 being the standard for anti-nausea/opiate-enhancing qualities. I would try and shoot for a slightly-above-therapuetic dose along with no more than 20mg promethazine.

Hmm, rxlist says 12.5, 25 and 50mg. Hopefully it's different (lower) for meprozine seeing as it's paired with mepedrine. I'll report on how it goes tomorrow, taking it slow.

The only promethazine/meperidine combo I have ever seen was 50mg meperidine and 25 mg promethazine (I'm not saying others don't exist though). 25mgs of promethazine will most likely put you out, unless you have a tolerance to it. I'd say start off with half the pill, and see what happens. You may end up falling asleep though, so do this in a location where you can fall asleep safely.
Ahh, in that case I'll wait til nighttime.

Those meperidine/promethazine combinations are pretty common. I think they are prescribed a lot more often than plain old demerol. I got meprozine for my wisdom teeth; there is another brand called mepergan fortis which is the same thing. It does help with the nausea and supposedly it takes less opioid to relieve pain when the person is sedated (by the additive effects of promethazine).
As for dosage, take at least 100mg meperidine; if it weren't for the promethazine, I would suggest taking more like 200-300mg. I don't think many other drugs have a worse oral bioavailability than this one.

Too true, as per Saunder's Nursing Drug Handbook 2002:
Dosage IV: 15-35mg/hr
By mouth/IM/SC: 50-150mg every 3-4 hrs
That basically means if you are swallowing your dose, it takes 4x the amount of demerol than it would if it was IV. Also note, that is a dose for legitamate pain control. I would say minimum recreation would be 150mg, but preferabbly 250mg.
