Demand for anti-anxiety meds still high

That's the best way imo why commit to taking a drug with horrific side effects, when these psychological problems can be treated with far more
benign and effective methods; using a band-aid approach doesn't fix the underlying causes. Besides, a drug for absolutely everything adds up to one large monkey on your back, and who would choose that?

The ones I listed are band-aids as well essentially. They need a cure!

What I was saying was that some conditions are complex and psychological in nature. I'll use anxiety as an example. In some cases, the anxiety is merely a symptom of a deeper issue. My mum has severe anxiety; I'm talking massive panic attacks, suicide attempts, its ruined her life. She's been on some of the strongest anti anxiety meds known to man, she was sedated, but a while back she had no therapist. Even with the pills, she was the worst I'd seen her in years, she tried cutting her wrist twice in one week. But when she re-engaged in therapy, I've noticed dramatic improvements; she's working on the real issues at play beneath the surface.

Of course a lot of us need our monkeys, myself included. What I meant was that in the long term, some of the more addictive drugs take away exactly what they give. I'll use benzo's here, drugs prescribed for anxiety. Say you've been taking them for years, then you run out one day, your going to suffer severe rebound anxiety not to mention some extremely nasty WD's. You didn't really treat the anxiety at all, you merely masked the symptoms of a deeper issue.

I wasn't suggesting that drugs are to be avoided; I'd be a hypocrite, and they can help a bad condition somewhat bearable, but they should be used as part of a wider treatment.

Perhaps because they actually work???

As opposed to all the pseudo-placebos you get from your shrink, Xanaxes actually fucking work! Get over it.

Disclaimer: I've sworn off Xanax, and the way I combat anxiety now is I run for miles in the midday sun. But I'll not say that benzodiazepines do not work. Anxiety is a chronic condition that many people can't simply CBT away, even if Ivan Pavlov himself were to take them on as patients.

^I wish it was still socially acceptable to drink constantly... It's about the only thing that calms me down enough to function.

Not typically in the West. That idea keeps you drinking, and drinking keeps you from realizing your problems, without which you can't challenge them and grow.

Of course drugs such as these have been widely used for a very, very long time, and quite possibly to counteract these issues. But the thing with the older generations is they seem to be a lot more resilient, and I doubt many would even have the vocabulary to describe many of these issues we so widely and eagerly medicate. They just "got on with it"

I'll use my grandparents as an example: they have not had an easy life, my grandad grew up in extreme poverty, he saw a lot of action in the war, and could quite possibly qualify as having ptsd; but he's never taken an antidepressant, or therapy in his life. Neither has he ever expressed dissatisfaction with life. In fact, he's reluctant to seek medical help for any reason; he just "gets on with it". This is the reason I really admire the "old school" folk, and would like to emulate their coping mechanisms.

Of course, I'm a modern man, and well schooled in medication culture. Plus, I'm a druggy, of course......

The pressure to conform has never been greater in my opinion. The competition never more intense. The world never more complicated, never more less human. I would pay good money to live in his time.
