Federal agents arrested Ten current or former Delta employees Thursday for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking at airports in Detroit and Houston, authorities said.

Two others who were not airline employees also were arrested.

"Today's arrests and charges close a major vulnerability at the airport," Immigration and Customs Enforcement director John Morton said in a statement. "We can't have people working in and around aircraft exploiting their positions for criminal ends."

The investigation -- dubbed "Operation Excess Baggage" -- began in January 2010, when Jamaican authorities seized 53 pounds of marijuana from a suitcase, the immigration and customs agency said in a statement.

The luggage, tagged with a Northwest Airlines baggage tag, was bound for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport from an airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the statement said. Delta and Northwest merged in 2008.

Authorities in Detroit later seized five suitcases containing 16 kilograms of cocaine and nearly 130 kilograms of marijuana, the statement said.

In March 2010, federal agents seized 45 more pounds of marijuana from two Delta employees at the Detroit airport, the statement said. Authorities allege those individuals were participating in a separate smuggling operation between Detroit and Houston.

Let the drugs flow =D

Even with repressive drug laws limiting our freedom of consciousness, people will use drugs.
It is perfectly natural to want to use drugs. People in every culture, from every period of history, have used drugs.
Someday, the gov will wise up to this, and stop making all this trouble over something so innocuous, so natural, that should be a protected freedom.
In the meantime, people will continue to risk their lives and freedom to sell, buy, and use drugs, and to make money from drugs.

Well spoken... Hopefully one day the government will see drug users no different as someone who smokes cigarettes, drinks Alcohol and not view them low life evil criminals. Legalize, Tax and educate the public instead of feeding them that bullshit D.A.R.E propaganda. The biggest killer from drugs is fluctuating quality of illicit substances. If they regulated it and distributed it themselves, it would save many lives and at the same time make money for our country; help it get out of that huge deficit that we are in because of stupid business practices.

The government doesn't understand that they are not stopping people from using drugs, they are only stopping people from using the drugs they seize. People will find other dealers, dealers will find other dealers, etc. It might take a while but there is too much money to be made in the game, imo, for it to ever stop. The only time it will stop is legalization but that is quite a ways off.

^but what would all those suddenly useless government tools do for work? Prohibition of alcohol failed and to keep their jobs they switched their sights over to pot. There are even more people who would be out of work this time around, who knows what the next 'threat' to our lives could be if they weren't allowed to hunt down drug users anymore. They'd have to find something to declare war on indefinitely.

I think they completely understand. The reason many drugs are illegal surely has to do with businesses that would be impacted by the legalization... Pharma and alcohol companies are the first ones that pop into my mind.

Why were they bringing in more weed over other things considering they knew the risk would be already bad, so they might as well go for the most lucrative route imo.

That and simply more money all around by keeping prohibition in place. Higher prices, more control of the flow of drugs.. This way almost everybody can milk the cash cow...

Although wasting taxpayer money JUST so other people can milk the cash cow is utterly retarded.
