I see this expression used often on BL. I had not seen it or heard it before I came to these forums. My interest lies in two things:

To opiate users:

1) do you know you are "nodding"?
2) how do people around you, who are not aware that you're high, describe what you look like when you are "nodding"?

I was a major opiate user. My use lasted about 30 months, purely for recreational purposes, and my doses incrased substantially over that time period. About 18 months into my addiction i was approached by someone at work who said i was "zoning out" at meetings. I was dosing about 400 mgs of oxycodone a day at this point. My work colleague described me as "staring into space for about 8 seconds and then SNAP i was back in the room". The interesting aspect is that i had no idea i was doing it. None. At about this time my wife started complaining about me "zoning out". Again, i had no idea. I thought i was just high. It wasn't my goal to "nod" and i became very concerned when word got out at my job that i was "falling asleep at client meetings".

Armed with the knowledge that people were starting to become aware of something going on i did what most addicts would do. I did my best to hide it. By 24 months into my addiction i was dosing about 800 mg a day mixing oxycodone and opana. I concentrated very hard at wok and around people to ensure that i wouldn't "nod". But again, i had no idea when it would happen or what it looked like. And again, my brain was the same one that convinced itself that i could easily taper off whenever i wanted. I was delusional. People said i "looked tired". Clearly, i should have decreased my dosage. But i was a compulsive addict and that was never a real option, unless i couldn't cop.

Within the last couple months when my body started to break down i became aware that i was "nodding". Not all the time. Only sometimes.

So, back to my initial question. To oxy users out there who are in the business of hiding your addiction, is "nodding" something that you're aware of or is it just an expression? How have people around you described what you look like without being aware you were dosed?

Btw, my addiction peaked at 1.2 grams per day of oxycodone (endocets 10/325) and Opana (40 mgs). I still have my job. No one found out. I'm 9 weeks on subs. And, miracle of all miracles, my liver is fine.

sometimes.

falling asleep mid-sentence..
usually w/slurring prior...
then jerking awake 10-15 sec. later..just to do it again.
if they weren't aware i was high @ first..
nodding off pretty much gave me away every time. :\

how have you done opiates for 18 months and don't know what nodding is lol, your falling asleep dude, you never saw a video or in real life a heroin addict or somethin fall asleep n wake up and keep doin it?

I allways use the term nod not only as a physical signal like the othe BLs are sayin but some opiates don't effect me that way. Don't get me wrong a very large quanity of morphine will do the trick but I don't nod (physically) from it I say got a good NOD as expression sayin I'm about as high as can be on that particular drug. Any high dose of most opiates/opioids are going to cause breaks in attention span that's what you should take into consideration be very aware of your surroundings and don't fucking nod at work, just sayin I don't know what line of work your in but I'm in heavy duty construction and a lift operator or driver nod just bout killed my bud and this guy is a good guy just gotta find that balance on how to just maintain at work and get high at home.

Man I didn't mean to come off like a dick that's not me I'm all about feeling good allday long that just hit home at the moment. But you can be a very productive person and still have a habit it's just a good idea to know when to show it. Hope I didn't offend.

^^
that's true..have always been super productive on opiates/opiods..
some of them are very stimulating to me..
and thankfully never put me in the position of nodding at work.

school..different story, tho..unfortunately.

Jrhguitarist1- that's not catching a nod..that really is just being high. :)

I used to hold people hostage with my nods, I'd be rolling a joint, get it rolled up, right to the point where I was about to lick the paper, nod, drop it - rinse and repeat, nodding out at the SAME point every single time. So close, yet so far. I always refused to let anybody else do it, and say I'd get it for SURE "this time"... now I realize how much of a dick I must have seemed like lol

People have different definitions with the obvious one being when you nodd off to sleep involuntarily usually accompanied by a good feeling and euphoria.

On the other hand I knew someone who could not nodd without injecting as he thought it meant that the rush was so strong that he could not stand up without getting nauseous and dizzy and had to lie down... IMO that just sounds unpleasant.

Edit: Also broke my pipe packing it once due to nodding... Was packing.. Packing.. All of a sudden I hear a crack and open my eyes to look down and see I dropped my piece from between my legs. Not a fun moment...

Another time I was just eating a bag of cereal in my lap nodding out using the computer when all of a sudden I wake up and wonder "wtf?!?!" and forget the cereal was on my lap spilling it to the ground as I moved my legs.

Does a bear shit in the woods?

Personally, i find nodding very uncomfortable. So you can't generalize it. When I am doing opiates/-ioids I want to utilize the energy and feeling of well being they give me and not sitting on my couch doing nothing and drooling like a newborn.

Well, that's my point. I was unaware that I was "nodding ". I was unaware of the expression "catching a nod" until i saw it on these boards. I don't come from a drug culture where i was sharing my oxy with someone or discussing what we looked like when we were high. Not a single friend or family member knew what i was doing. This isn't meant to be a joke. I really had no idea that I was zoning out for 8 to 10 seconds at a time. No idea. it just felt like time was passing.

As I look back on those 30 months of addiction I wonder when people around me at work "really" started to notice that I was pretty damn Fucked up. I was an addict who was hiding my adiction from everyone around me while maintaining a family life and a professional life that involved intaction with clients.

I don't mean to come across as naive but that's exactly what i was and remain to this day. A naive addict who used to dose a gram a day and did my best to ensure that no one, not a single person, found me out. "Nodding" became the hardest thing to overcome. Hence my curiosity in other people who have hidden their addiction and their ability to fight the nod. Hence my curiosity in those who "seek" the nod while to me it became, near the end of my addiction, the thing i dreaded the most. I actually had to invent a whole side story to people at work about why i was doing it.
