From what I've observed it seems like many Christians fundamentally lack understanding of some of the basic moralistic teachings of the bible or what Jesus said.

Yes, and Jesus complained about this all the time. Like a hipster he complained that people in his home town didn't see how great he was and didn't get him, he complained that his parents and his family cramped his style.
