John David Duty was sentenced to die for killing his cellmate while he was incarcerated on rape and robbery charges.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

* Pentobartibal is used to euthanize animals
* Sodium thiopental, usually used for executions, is in short supply
* John David Duty's execution will be the last in the U.S. in 2010

(CNN) -- An Oklahoma death row inmate will receive a drug commonly used to euthanize animals Thursday because of a nationwide shortage of sodium thiopental, the drug usually used as the sedative in its three-drug execution cocktail.

John David Duty's execution will be the last in the United States in 2010 and is believed to be the first in the country to use pentobarbital in a lethal injection.

Duty was convicted and sentenced to die for strangling his 22-year-old cellmate, Curtis Wise, with shoe laces while serving three life sentences for rape, robbery and shooting with intent to kill from a 1978 conviction.

I heard on CNN today that Arizona lent California 12 grams of sodium pentathol today?

On a similar note, why do they use a rare and expensive drug for executions? Why can't they just knock you out with a sedative and then stop your heart with potassium chloride. No pain, quick, easy, and inexpensive. There are hundreds of different drug combinations which would do the job that's just one example.

I always wondered why a massive opiod overdose isn't used. Im sure thats painless.

The original reason was that it was feared that if patients knew that morphine was used to kill condemned criminals, they would be afraid to take their prescribed medication (i disagree - i think it would have instilled a healthy caution toward opiates, which would be a good thing!)

I don't understand why they don't just use a massive opiate overdose either.

Would anyone survive an injection of say, 50mg of fentanyl? If that wasn't certain enough, throw in as much midazolam as you can get into the syringe, then follow it with KCl to stop the heart if the sedatives are insufficient.

Ohio allows an intramuscular injection of dilaudid if a suitable blood vessel can't be found for an iv.

Why do you have to kill in the first place? As John Lennon once said: "Killing for peace is like fucking for virginity"

Prison doesn't make sense to me, surely its logical that if you lock people up like animals then they will act like animals. Some people do need to be locked away from soceity but many don't. Its also sickening that they used something thats used to kill animals on a human

you didn't deserve to go to prison. "punishment" is for monkeys. humans adapt and change, and prison is hardly a good catalyst for positive change.

That it's used on animals really has nothing to do with it, it's also quite commonly used on people... It's like ketamine, whenever it's mentioned in the news it's as a 'horse tranquiliser' - they always seem to forget/ignore the fact that it's a safe and common anaesthetic in people.

I was referring to the fact that In my opinion it was demeaning a human life to that of an animal. Something along those lines
