I live in a part of the UK where people have a strong accent & I am very proud of the way I sound. The sub section I live in is different to the Birmingham accent too "Ow's bid ya ar wench, I ay sid ya it time en it" for example.

Everywhere I go these days I hear people taking on this monotone, Made in Chelsea, half American half Eton educated foul drone.
I find it really sad when people all want to sound the same tbh, as harsh as some accents are it is good to hear a different change from what you hear every day.

I am just waiting till I run into Part time crack head & he sounds like some Oxford university Tory, that would just about kill me with laughing.

Anyone else noticed the death of the accent?..........

And any middle class people on here that have taken on this Made in Chelsea accent, please stop it. You aint fooling anyone with that fake way you speak, hang your head in shame.

not round ere matey . i was in Brizzle yesterday n the accent is as strong as ever .

Round by me there are 100's of people taking this fake way to speak, it makes me sick.

It is so rare you hear proper "Black country" these days & it seems to me everyone under the age of 25 take on this stupid way to speak.

It is the diease of reality TV like The Hills, The only way is Essex, Made in Chelsea etc that make people think they have to speak all the same with this bullshit tone to their voice.
Every time I hear someone doing it I feel like breaking out in a proper Dudley accent & just blowing their mind

The accent round here is so hard to disguise , i get what your implying though.

I often hear groups of students( not locals ) chatting in some stupid contrived accents

Marmalade has heard me speak. I don't think she could make out a word I was saying, so if she reads this thread she can confirm that I have a proper unintelligible Scottish accent.

Round here you get what we refer to as "The Glasgow Uni Accent" (Glasgow Uni being the posh university in town). It's like a really watered down posh, almost English sounding accent. Drives me mad. The amount of times I've wanted to shout at people "YOU DON'T ACTUALLY TALK LIKE THAT!!!!". There's not one part of the country where people naturally speak that way, but every posh wee student from Glasgow Uni does.

I know what you mean by cracking out the Dudley accent lol. When I'm around people like that it makes me subconsciously talk more & more like a bam the longer I'm around them, like my accent gets stronger.

There's no disguising the accent here neither an I quite like it, a nice change to where i grew up, but happy i dont have to hear a north liverpool accent every day

There's a massive variety of (local) accents even within the city of Manchester's boundaries, let alone the wider Greater Manchester area. Extend that to the north-west as a whole and we've got one of the richest and most diverse mixes in the whole of Britain. I can usually make a good guess at what district somebody lives in, or at least whether they're from north, south or east Manchester (we don't have a west as such).

I've noticed a similar diversity over a (relatively) small geographical area in the West Midlands and in London. A lot of these are dying out because people travel to the big town and city centres to work, thus absorbing more influences which tend to lead to some degree of homogenisation.

Dialect is eroding at a quicker rate than accent though, I find. In fact, there are actually new accents (or variations of older ones with newer cultural influences) springing up in big cities.

If you mean RP, I don't think it's necessarily 'fake' as such (though many people do fake it and quite often fail); it's just down to the influences that people absorb. A lot of the people I mix with socially (girlfriends especially) are from elsewhere, so you absorb theirs.

Though there are some people who do speak as if they're convinced they're on TV, yeah. I agree.

It's a fascinating subject. Or I find it to be so, anyway.

My own accent is identifiably Mancunian, with a twang to it that some people identify as scouse (i.e. southerners) and others Irish (non-southerners). Though it's also said that I'm 'softly spoken', so it's not your Ian Brown / Liam Gallagher-style drawl. Which is ultimately fake anyway - especially Brown's.

I 'm on the phone with business owners in different parts of the country all day and there is no shortage of accents, I tend to stay in one area for a few hours then move to another one and its quite funny the differences between them all.

I love accents, I don't really think I have one but I must do as I don't some brizzling or scottish or brummy, I'm just a normal suvernor with an occasional pompey twang.

I think some people intentionally lose their accents, I know one person IRL that did that for reasons it's not my place to say, so some people do try and lose their accents and succeed very well at it, I just hope the whole country doesn't do it.

I love the welsh accent by the way, a hot welsh girl would be perfect for me.

What you mean by "RP" Samhaingrim?..........

RP stands for Received Pronunciation.

RP is an accent, not a dialect, since all RP speakers speak Standard English. In other words, they avoid non-standard grammatical constructions and localised vocabulary characteristic of regional dialects.

RP is also regionally non-specific, that is it does not contain any clues about a speaker’s geographic background. But it does reveal a great deal about their social and/or educational background.

Most of the people who claim not to have an accent actually use this accent. It has roots in London, Oxford and Cambridge, but spread further afield when it was adopted by the BBC in the twenties.

We have spoken many times . To me your accent is pretty plain , i can't place it to a certain Area.

What about me ?
Does my accent come through when we speak ?

You must have a fairly strong accent if Mugz accent comes across as plain. I thought he had a crazy strong Southern accent when he posted a wee clip of him talking.

Like most others who have a local accent i also find that after a few drinks it comes out much stronger.

Aye, winampishedapeeyurstartawkinlikiss.

Have you heard many people from Brizzzle / Bath area PT ?

It is a very strong accent & mine is not half as strong as most . We also have many words that are colloquial like yerself .
