This may or may not be suited for ditm but i figured it was worth posting anyways. its actually kinda sad.

It was almost “death by condiment” for a 19-year-old man, who very nearly lost his life after consuming more than a quart of soy sauce on a dare, various media outlets reported over the weekend.

The unnamed teenager, who was the subject of a case study in the Journal of Emergency Medicine, slipped into a coma with seizure-like activity after overdosing on the sodium-heavy substance.

He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with hypernatremia, explained Jenn Harris of the Los Angeles Times. Hypernatremia is a metabolic condition caused by too much salt in the blood. The excessive amount of sodium causes the patient’s brain to lose water, shrink and bleed, she added.

“He didn’t respond to any of the stimuli that we gave him,” said Dr. David J. Carlberg, who treated the teenager as an emergency room physician at University of Virginia Medical Center, according to a FoxNews.com report. “He had some clonus, which is just elevated reflexes. It’s a sign that basically the nervous system wasn’t working very well.”

Often times, doctors attempt to slowly reduce a hypernatremia patient’s sodium levels in order to prevent further shock to the body, ABC News reporter Gillian Mohney said. In this case, however, Dr. Carlberg and his colleagues attempted to lower the 19-year-old’s salt levels quickly in order to prevent damage to his brain.

“They quickly tried to flush the salt from his system with a water-and-sugar-based solution in an effort to protect his brain from lasting damage,” Mohney explained. “Eventually the doctors were able to stabilize the patient, even though he remained in a coma. After three days he woke up from the coma without suffering any lasting neurological damage.”

Dr. Carlberg told reporters that he believed the young man survived because they were able to reduce his sodium levels quickly. “We were more aggressive than had been reported before in terms of bringing his sodium back down to a safer range,” he said, adding that slower salt level reduction has had mixed or poor results in the past.

haha, you know, i was going to say darwin award winner, but then im thinking if this kid was somehow peer pressured into doing this, (think about some of the things you have seen ppl do to try and be accedpted in any way) so thats why i didnt put it, but drinking a quart of practically pure sodium, i mean come on...how did he even keep it down? even the green top low sodium stuff is still really salty. when i worked at this gym a few years ago there was a fantastic sushi place up the street so we would get lunch from there quite often, and one of the girls i worked with would take a piece of maki roll and just dunk it in soy sauce lol, all in all she would probably end up consuming half a cup of soy sauce. gross.

Soy sauce= the new trend in drugs that is (nearly) killing teenagers!
Parents of the teenager in this story are traveling across the world, giving talks in high schools and appearing before government committees, trying to get soy sauce made illegal!
Anyone - even a 5-year old child- can buy this drug in the corner store without any ID!!
How long will this craziness continue?

Not sure if this belongs in HL, but I honestly have no idea where to move it to.

Either way... gross. I think if I consumed that much salt I would puke. How he held it down long enough for it to enter his blood is a mystery to me.

Maybe he also ate a pound of pickled gii nger with it for the anti nauseant properties lol. Idk why but it reminds me of the south park where everyone is getting high on cat piss and calling it "cheesing" lol

It is a sad story tho that this kid will probably never ever be normal again

Its about time someone banned this stuff!
I mean to say, its everywhere- far too readily available without ANY health warnings whatsoever. I for one, urge you write to local MP and get this stuff taken off our supermarket aisles before more young people become victims.

^^^ Ban soy sauce!!! That's a bit extreme yea? I like a little bit on my Chinese food.;)

Some people are ignorant and misuse the simplest stuff like "soy sauce".

Well, maybe make it only available in little fish bottles that contain 2.5 mils.
Really, humans are too irresponsible to deal with significant quantities of this substance!

Lmao. That made me laugh.

I puked after drinking 1/2 gal of milk. :O Hungover.. because I wanted to..

Lol

A guy i used to work with tried the whole drinking a gal of milk thing in under an hour or whatever. Im extremely lactose tolerant for some reason and when i was a few years younger would go thru like 2 gal a week, so im thinking it might be possible. But as we are sitting there and i actually see the size of the plastic container and how much milk expands once its in you i knew no way could he do it or shit, could i. And yup, he got like half way thru and was trying to take the lactaid pills and drink more but it turned into a huge pukefest lol

Oh my gosh, lactaid pills? Was it on an empty stomach?

I think mine was in an hour. I just kept filling up my glass and saying, omg this milk is soo good! And then my bf looked in the refrigerator and was like, you drink half a gal! And then I was like, it's so refreshing--OMG I LOVE MILK--RAufghfjkfnHHHHHHH.

I bet he was drunk. My friend opted to drink a bottle of Frank's Redhot Sauce at a diner once. Later that day he was literally crying in pain within the bathroom from the bowel movements he experienced.

Honestly reading the original post made me shudder. I can only imagine how bloated he got and what happened to his blood pressure.
