Day 5 on Methadone

GA I am about 45 mins North of Atlanta
Well it is my fifth day of Methadone in an effort to manage my pain as well as stop the cycle of overtaking my meds.

It has gone ok for the most part although I believe my initial dosage may be too low because I am having more pain than I expected. But I have until the 6th of March to fully evaluate how the Methadone is working for me so we will see what happens.

One thing I have noticed is that over the last couple of days I have become much more lethargic and drowsy. I am not over taking Methadone at all and in fact I take my dosages regularly at the same interval every day. Do you know if the drowsiness will go away as my system becomes used to the methadone? I read online that people with multiple diagnosis can also benefit from a script for an amphetamine but I don't know if I could take that with methadone. Also, not sure my doc would go for that. Look forward to any info any of you have. Thanks :o

I'm surprised you have to wait that long to be able to up your dosage if you are still in pain. That defeats the purpose, which is literall in your case. Someone close this.

Actual pain management? Then why is she putting up with any pain? She's clearly not at the right dose. Most PM docs I've dealt with would actually have you there with them while the 'done took effect to judge if they should give you MORE.

Being scripted some amphetamine anologue while on 'done would be fucking awesome. There wouldn't be any complication in doing this. I wouldn't do it as a doctor though because people with methadone already obviously have very addictive personalities..whatever the hell that really means.

uhhh I actually have been on methadone for over a year and im STILL drowsy and lethargic a lot of the time, i would rather be lethargic though, than fiending for opiates.

I was on methadone for six months last year and I never adjusted to the drowsy feeling so I ended up going off the program. I just couldn't handle being incredibly lethargic every day, all day. Not even my DOC was causing me to feel that wiped out.

Everyone's body is different though. I have quite a bit of friends and it's working for them just fine, without the drowsy feeling.

When I started MMT, I was given a low dose of 20mg/day, but I didn't exprerience anything sedative related. I was just normal on it, not event the first day of taking the methadone did I feel anything. But I wasn't heavily addicted to strong opiates in the first place, that's why this 20mg/day dose was enough for me.

I was on the Percocets for actual pain management. I have several chronic problems that cause a lot of pain. But when I saw myself slipping into addiction I went to my doc and explained the situation. He said that he believed I had built too much tolerance for the meds and that a long acting med like Methadone would help. He started me at a low dose to see if it worked and then we would go from there.

The reason I have to wait 30 days is that since I advised him I was overtaking meds in the first place I don't want him to think I am in it for the high. Ya know? He is super nice and really wants to help but I fear if I don't give it a real cahnce then he will become suspicious of my motives. Also he only sees patients on a strict 30 day cycle. And when he gave me the meds he said he believed it would take several days for me to really feel good.

Of course that is easy for him to say, he is not the one in pain, but still I do want to do all I can to cooperate and get myself on track, both physically and mentally.

oh ..and the reason I mentioned the amphetamines is that in studying up on mehtadone online etc I found that some poeple, with some of my physical conditions, have shown a lot of improvement when they are given amp with the methadone. But I don't know if that is more for addiction than pain management.

I have a friend with MS and her Pain doc gives her fentenyl patches, lortab 10's and ritalin and she says it boost her pain meds effect. I just wondered if that was a legitimate option.

I just do not want to EVER fall back into the opiate cycle of overmedicating for the wrong reason. I hope and pray I can keep that behind me. Physical pain is hard to deal with, but not as bad as the pain of wd from opiates and the mental effects of dependency.

Because of the long half-life of methadone its very easy to overdose on the 2nd and 3rd day and physicians usually wait to be absolutely sure they are beyond that precarious window where the patient can die in his/her sleep.

He's going to know you're not in it for the high because when you're on a maintenance methadone program (which I'm sure you're doing something similar to) you don't really get high. You might at the very beginning but after you're up, up and away don't expect to keep feeling up, up and away. ;)

As to the first question, I'm not quite certain. It's probably something you'd have to discuss with your doctor.

You do realize you will become dependent on methadone, right? It does take a very firm hold on your body in a short amount of time. Methadone withdrawal is not by any means fun at all, I assure you.
