Day 5 on Methadone

I know that a lot of people have to visit their doc to get their dose but my doc doesn't distribute any medications from his office. And because I started on a very low dose(30mg 1 10mg tab 3x's a day) I guess he did not foresee an issue.

I have stuck strictly to my dosage as prescribed and I am really hoping that I see some improvement in my pain relief. I guess because I was on such a ridiculous dose of Percocets the methadone is just not quite enough. I don't want to get high and I don't want to take enough methadone to have nausea etc. I have been having some drowsiness, but usually its not too bad until late evening so I am ok with that.

I have 3 young kids and as a single mom I have to be functional on all levels. Its just all new to me and I don't mean to ask dumb questions, its just that I have limited resources as far as info goes. All of you on here seem to have had enough experiences with different issues that here would the best place to start when I have questions.

Yeah I know Methadone has an awful withdrawal and its kind of like trading the devil for the witch. But I am going to be on pain management for the remainder of my life and since there is not a high involved with methadone at least I have not felt the need to abuse it. When I was on percocets I would run thru my monthly dose in 2 weeks then I would have to start buying meds off the street. And that was not always available so I was facing a few days of wd every month and I could not stand anymore of it. There is no easy answer to any of it, I know, but I hope that this is the best answer for me right now. Thank you for your advice.

Well if you if you really need pain management, why not try Morphine Sulfate? Orally it does not produce much of a high at all IMO but is great in treating pain......to me it is not as addicting and fiendish as other opioids would be.......but thats just me....

Hey sherm...My doc did offer that to me as an alternative but I had been on it briefly in the past and it did not work well for me. It made me very nauseous and drowsy and then very irritable. Demerol has the same effect on me to. Its like my nerves are on edge and I can't decide if I want to cry or cuss. And the nausea and lathargy did not improve with time. I am not sure why it affects me that way. Lots of other people have told me it is great for them. Thank you for the advice, I think you all are the best source of info on the net.

Because of the long half-life of methadone its very easy to overdose on the 2nd and 3rd day and physicians usually wait to be absolutely sure they are beyond that precarious window where the patient can die in his/her sleep.

Ya but she's talking about having to wait 'till march. That's such BS.

I'm pretty sure that anyone on here should know that opiates are just gonna cause some degree of lethargy and nausea.
But, if you want proper pain management, then it will just have to be that way.
That is, if you have not gone through therapy, and that did not work.

Well Jay.. I know that what you say is true. Like I said, there is not a miracle pill for any of this. I guess I have to decide if the pros outweigh the cons enough to accept the side effects. And at this point, considering there are not a lot of options, and I can't deal with opiate addiciton anymore, the pros win. But I think my best choice is to talk to my doc about the Methadone dosage and see if a slight increase might solve the issue.
