totally agree horsey.
it is teen pop crap - your average teen drama, hormone heavy with lashings of adolescent angst.
but from the start its been a critical and commercial hit and a controversial talking point - since '98.
All its doing is covering issues which affect (american) teens - (pretty much sex / relationships / and recently, getting into college) - its not really dealing with anything teens dont already know about.
The way they dealt with the rave topic, i think, was good .. i mean of course its not realistic, playing the chemical brothers albums and so on, but isnt that a good thing ?
1> they presented ecstacy as being great fun, making the user feel 'happy'.
2> the way andy acted when on the pill was way more genuine than i was expecting.
3> andy collapsed because she mixed street drugs with her medication / antidepressants, not because the pill itself was going to kill her.
and as horsey said, isnt it better getting adolescents (let alone anyone) watchin this sorta thing instead of the recent explosion of 'real-life' shows since last years big success of survivor1.
now we have
shipwrecked, shipwrecked 2, survivor2 (which i am also addicted to), the mole, temptation island (yep, addicted to this also), as well as a couple of new game shows - greed, and the weakest link ..
all of which generally run along the theme of "scheme and plot against the other contestants, putting your own personal interests ahead of everyone elses.. fuck everyone else over so you can get ahead, win the money, etc"
and perhaps even worse with temptation island, separating couples and putting them in the position where they either betray their partner to some extent (that being their choice, of course) or have no fun and not be a valuable part of the show in terms of footage of interest to viewers.
on tuesday two of the guys asked the cameras to leave them alone, that what they were discussing did not concern the show, that it is
"their life" ..
to which they were answered with a sharp
"your life is the show right now..".
these "real-life" shows are bringing out the ugliest of human traits - greed, betrayal, deceit.. temtation island is on the very edge of complete controversy.. and thats exactly what makes these so appealing to a wide audience of viewers.
but is it (morally) a good message to be sending out, particularly to younger viewers who are more impressionable ?
dawsons creek is cupcakes in comparison !
