David Nutt suggests alcohol sensors 'in every car'
Alcohol sensors should be in every car to cut drink-related road deaths and injuries, says the government's former chief drugs adviser.

David Nutt says motorists would have to breathe into the devices before starting their car, to test they were not over the limit.

Prof Nutt was sacked from his post three years ago after clashing with Labour ministers over drugs policy.

He later set up the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs.

That body ranked alcohol as a more harmful substance than heroin and cocaine.

He also said people in the UK would be less inclined to get drunk if they were able to smoke cannabis at Amsterdam-style "cannabis cafes".

Prof Nutt, president of the British Neuroscience Association and a professor at Imperial College, London, said Britain was facing a "public health crisis" of "immense proportions" because of a rise in the number of alcohol-related illnesses and deaths.

Although he welcomed plans for minimum unit pricing in England, Wales and Scotland, saying it will have a "big impact" on heavy drinkers, Prof Nutt said much more must be done.

I would far, far prefer to encounter a driver who is high than one who is drunk while on my bike.
Here in Japan, there is a zero tolerance policy for alcohol while driving. Like, your blood must have 0.0% alcohol, or you are in trouble. It seems to work. It would save the trouble of putting a tester in every car.

just get someone else to breathe into it for you

Withnail: At some point or another I want to stop and get hold of a child.

I: What do you want a child for?

Withnail: To tutor it in the ways of righteousness, and to procure some uncontaminated urine.

If people actually used it properly (not having a sober person breath into it for them); it would be great.

There's no excuse for drunk driving. Call a cab, take a bus, call a relative or friend, or stay the night at a friend or family members house close by.

Drunk driving turns my stomach. My 10 year old cousin was killed by a drunk driver who hit her while my aunt got put into a coma from it. Theres now a teddy bear and cross holding her name on the interstate where she died.

Drunk driving . Disgusting.

In Australia we have interlocks for those caught drink-driving. If you're caught drink driving with one of these in the car, ie, someone else was blowing into it, you have to attach a camera to it which takes your photo each time you blow in it. Also, that's IF you get your license back at all, and probably after you've served a mandatory prison sentence.

It goes off randomly between 5 and 60 minutes. These things have all been thought of and they are common place in Australia. There is lots of data available and they are obviously not stupid. I heard all of these "what ifs" in my drink driver education course which is mandatory for anyone caught drink driving. They've all been thought of.

I've heard that hooking an extra long chunk of hose and using displaced air will get by these interlocks. Truth?
