david bowie r.i.p.

I don't know - there are some pretty interesting artists around nowadays.
Bowie was pretty revolutionary because he used rock'n'roll to challenge a lot of social norms, gender roles and such.

It would be impossible to make that kind of impact in the current musical/social/global media climate nowadays.
Music has lost the power to shock - but not the power to move or inspire us.
Bowie was amazing, and part of his brilliance was being one step ahead of the zeitgeist, and using it to his advantage (with great skill).

That's it. Much of the transgressive nature of rock has been subsumed by the dollar, but there are definitely challenging and innovative artists around. I don't feel like there is many in popular music though. Trangression is such a gimmick anyhow. There are some intriguing metal bands around who are genuinely weird, but even they aren't that odd.

I admire the martial/industrial band Laibach, simply for their dedication to weirdness and aesthetic (plus there music is occaisionally great). Of course, they emerged slightly post-Bowie and were influenced by him.

There is definitely a hole in the music world right now. Is there another artist that can come close to filling that void? Never, but there has to be someone. Not a replacement, but a creative cutting edge artist that has similar qualities.

Tbh, I didn't really rate a lot of the Bowie stuff post Scary Monsters so I don't think there is a "hole in the music world". No doubt it's sad to see him go, but he hasn't been at the cutting edge of music for quite a while.

Yep, a genius for sure David Bowie was. I think one of the most fascinating things about DB passing is how well he looked and the fat smile on his face 2 days before he passed. Truly an inspiration in life and death. We should all be so confident and humble.

I've always thought David Bowie and Lou Reed were the greatest musicians of modern music. The fact they're no longer here, makes me feel they have to exist out there in some form or another.
