I have a friend with a Datura plant in his front yard, and I was wondering if its worth trying it. I have read a lot of experiences and some talk about negative experiences with it some describe positive experiences. So is Datura worth trying?

If you want to have delirious hallucinations and intense cotton-mouth for three days, be my guest. Some people can wring a good experience out of anything -- perhaps you're one of those lucky few. ;)

I've never tried it, but I often like to read the reports (Usually in the Trainwreck/Disaster) category out of morbid interest. If Datura is all you can find to get 'high' with, don't bother. It will probably give you an uncomfortable and confusing trip, assuming you do not poison yourself. It is a very dangerous plant to take.
Be patient and maybe try to find mushrooms or something with a safer profile. Above all, there is lots of information on Bluelight and Erowid about Datura. Reading it will hopefully back up my advice.
I hope you can find a safer way to explore altered states than Datura. It definitely seems to be an ordeal rather than an enlightening experience to most.
Take care - Peace - Pipp

Well I was thinking of DMT, but I don't want to buy the seeds then plants a tree. I mean I could maybe look for trees in my state to find, but I live in Louisiana there is a shitload of trees everywhere. Might take a while to find it. If it grows in my state at all.

DMT tree, eh? Are you planning to extract DMT from eucalyptus or something? Be aware that it's a time-consuming process requiring a fair amount of know-how and a lot of attention to detail. It's not the kind of thing you can just jump into knowing nothing and expect much success. :\

Since you seem to be vacillating between Datura and DMT (8(), I second the recommendation above about sticking to something safer and more likely to give you a good experience, like mushrooms.

seriously?

datura is a terrible terrible drug. there are tons of drugs you can get (semi) legally that are worth taking (where as datura is NOT). dmt (though not from plants in the US unless you find phalaris grass i suppose) mecasline cacti, morning glory seeds, to name a few. im not going to tell you how to get these, do some basic research and you will figure it out.

For an explanation why not, read reports... sure there are a few positive ones, but like 99% of them are negative, and often EXTREMELY negative, with results such as ending up in the hospital hurt or mutilated, or in jail, and often involving being naked and doing such antics as breaking into someone's house because you thought it was yours or something. I've only read like 3 reports ever that sounded like any amount of fun... usually people barely remember, or if they do remember, the events that happen seem like they're completely normal, not at all recreational. It can last for days too. Plus it's extremely unhealthy for your body and mind. And some people report never feeling quite the same again. And it's really easy to dangerously overdose. Plus it in universally described as being physically very uncomfortable.

Datura is exceptionally dangerous and never something to do for fun or because you're bored.

I think sometimes people have a tendency to read reports, find a couple of ones that sound good, and then disregard the massive number of negative ones and warnings. You need to be honest with yourself. If, out of 20 reports, only 1 sounds like anything you'd want to experience, then it's not something you're likely to enjoy.

Go to Erowid.org and read the trip reports about Datura. I've never heard about someone having a good experience on Datura unless they were taking it in a guided religious ceremony.

It's a VERY dangerous plant and the experience sounds crazy and you can easily die or go blind or get messed up mentally since the alkaloid content of the various parts of the plant can be unknown to someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

I had a friend in college who wanted to take Datura.

He ate the wrong plant by accident and he was majorly into high doses of DXM, K, and dissociative and he's lucky he ate the wrong plant.

I know that with Ayahusca admixtures the Ayahuascero will sometimes add some Datura to the mixture of plants but this is for a guided spiritual/religious ceremony.

Is Datura a valuable entheogen which is very powerful and important to many cultures?

Yes.

Should YOU personally ingest it?

Probably not.

Datura, DXM, and DMT are three totally different animals. What do you hope to find in these drugs?

You don't have to grow anything yourself to extract DMT. With some studious online research I was highly successful with my first extraction.

^ Yes, it's certainly more environmentally conscientious to grow your own ethnobotanical materials. Some people may only wish to experiment once with a small quantity of DMT to satisfy a curiosity, however, rendering it impractical to raise a tree (this is prone to change upon breaking through, however ; ). Others may not be in a position to grow their own materials (living with parents that disapprove of psychedelic practices, etc.).

Good advice. :)

Which native cultures is it important to besides natives in the Amazon, Natives in/around Virginia and in the United States Southwest if we are to believe anything of what Carlos Castaneda wrote?

Most Solanaceae out there are for the experienced Shamans only. Even tobacco (N. rustica)!

I have known personally several bad experiences from ingesting just one leaf. Several of them ending in hospitals. Anticholinergic tropane alkaloids are nothing to fool around.

However, plants like mandrake, jimsonweed or nightshade have been an important source of entheogenic experiences in this Old World. The recipes to go to the Sabbath have unfortunately been lost with the Inquisition.

However I have witnessed here and there a renewed interest in D. stramonium seeds. 2-3 seeds in conjunction with other safer alkaloids provide another level of experience that has been confirmed by many. Search and thou shall find!
