POLICE have warned women to be vigilant about drink spiking after reports that date- rape drug GHB is back on Perth streets in large quantities.

Detectives are investigating a vicious sexual assault on a young woman this week.

Police say the woman had no alcohol in her system and it appears she may have been drugged.

It is understood her injuries are so bad that she was being treated in hospital.

GHB, which has a street name of "fantasy", recently has been identified in three substances at the police forensic laboratory.

It is the first time in 2 1/2 years that the lab has detected the drug.

Data from Drug Use Monitoring Australia shows detainees in the East Perth lock-up have reported a big increase in the drug's availability.

In a recent survey of detainees at the lock-up, GHB was the most frequently mentioned new or re-emerging drug.

ssistant Police Commissioner Nick Anticich said the reported numbers of GHB were "just the tip of the iceberg".

"It is here and more likely than not in greater numbers than what we are seeing," he said.

"It is illegal and those people found in possession, dealing or trafficking it will be dealt with in the harshest possible way."

Mr Anticich confirmed police were investigating a connection between GHB and the sexual assault of a Perth woman this week.

"Regardless of what the outcome of this investigation is the potential for this drug to be used for those purposes is something everyone needs to be mindful of," he said.

National Drug Research Institute director Steve Allsop said GHB was notorious for being easy to overdose on.

"The risk is that the difference between the amount required for the high effect and overdose is very small," Prof Allsop said. "That risk is substantially increased if it is mixed with other drugs."

bollocks.
alcohol is the #1 "date rape drug".
first it says "it appears she may have been drugged"
and then it says "It is the first time in 2 1/2 years that the lab has detected the drug."
which one is it?!

i don't mean to downplay sexual assault, because i know all too well how fucked up and traumatic that is - especially when there are stupefying drugs involved - but the media loves to blame assaults of various sorts on illegal drugs. so rarely is it reported that people are "date raped" (whatever the fuck that means) when they've been drinking too much, though i'm sure that much more common.
tabloids love a drug/sex/violence headline...but never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

As if you wouldnt notice something is wrong with your drink if say GBL/GHB has been added to it. It tastes so foul, I added 2ml's of the shit to 300ml of orange juice and still tasted so so bad. Even if one would be drunk they'd still notice it. Load of shit. I read few articles on this and most of the time it was just alcohol that caused it.

I think GBL etc would be easy to add to a drink, I don't taste a few mls at all in a big glass of cordial.

This article is making some very flimsy connections though. It appears she may have been drugged? That's dismal. They've just added an emotive story at the start to set the tone for the bit on g, which appears to have no relevance to this case at all! Really, really poor effort, and a good example of making a story up with no substance whatsoever.

It reminds me of one of those stupid NW or Grazia magazines, 'our source said GHB is coming back!' 8(

I feel sorry for the lady.
This article doesn't say where this happened or what happened.
I can see big holes here.
Just because there is GBH in Perth Lockup doesn't mean it was used in a sexual assault case!!!
So what if GBH was identified in 3 substances. What were the other substances???
What a crock of shit.
At least Prof Allsop was telling the truth and not making loose connections.

Wouldn't it be a lil suspicious if some guy was carrying a past out girl out of a bar? I mean doesn't it knock the girl out? How do all these guys drop it into a girls drink then walk out of the bar carrying the girl out and nobody says anything? Hmmm strange

Jesus, I doubt even a gallon of really any sort of liquid could overcome that GBL taste, i've done some sick things like chug aya before but the way GBL coats your mouth in disgustness and doesn't like to be washed away...ecck! I could never imagine being drugged with GBL, like stated even when put in large drinks its highly noticeable for me(when I used GBL I would actually rather drink a couple mls less diluted than more so, tastes like shit either way and you have drink less liquid one way atleast). I would usually actually use a cup thats like the kind commonly to pour a solid drink of something like scotch or whiskey into(high ball or low ball glass, can't remember what its called!)and only fill it about halfway so it would only take two gulps to get down. I would think if someone was sipping on the glass more and more they would wonder what that funky after taste is, with GHB not so much, to me it always was like someone poured really slick salt(IDK why but in liquid form my GHB always seemed to have the oddest texture....)thrown into it. Either way, onto the real stuff, its like 9 times out of 10 whenever date rape or a sexual assault involving chemicals they always mention GHB(they named it the date rape drug for fuck sake!)or flunitrazpam. Either of those if you actually check is really used in sexual assaults, like someone else pointed out probably by a pretty extreme margin, ethanol is the winner! Number wise it would be like 100 GHB/flu date rape cases in the past 20 years whereas ethanol probably has 100K. So fucking annoying and the public eats it right up.....

GBL does taste even worse than 1,4 B, but I find putting it in undiluted cordial really effective. I used to mix undiluted cordial and 'g' (whatever type) in one of those cough medicine cups, so not big at all, and that went down pretty well. Maybe I just have a shitty sense of taste, but I remember thinking originally that anybody would be able to taste it in a drink, but after experimenting myself, concluding it'd be pretty easy to get away with.

Well actually to be honest i've always thought my sense of taste was a bit extreme as most people can sublingal many sorts of drugs with little reaction whereas I simply want to retch or recoil in anguish after putting nearly anything like that into my mouth. I still have a nagging feeling however I would taste the GBL. I don't exactly know how to describe that defiling taste but its so oddly unique given its texture plus its taste. Since its a solvent as well I find doing anything less than chugging the mixed drink as fast as I can then washing my mouth out with whatever usually will kinda aggravate my mouth a bit as well. 1,4 b i've never personally tasted so I can't say though most people seem to unanimously agree its not as bad as GBL. I dunno maybe its my taste but I remember my friend immeadiately coining GBL as the worst thing hes ever tasted in his entire life after 1.5mls diluted into a fair bit of liquid, i'm pretty sure we also concluded it would be nearly impossible to drug someone with this(plus when you think about it, your going to want to aim as high as possible without actually getting to dangerous, I mean I know from experience most people's experiences with GBL/unconsciousness can vary quite a bit, as I myself won't be knocked unconsciousness until around 3 to 4 mls whereas other people need like 2/2.5mls, so I would think if your attempting to drug someone you would try to get atleast like 4-7mls into the drink and anywhere past 3mls for me even in pretty large drinks seemed to have a fairly strong taste to the point of it being uncomfortable to drink without chugging/washing out). It just seems way more unlikely to me though GBL would probably be the most suited as on an empty stomach I could be well sedated 2 minutes in and be nearly peaking by 5-7 minutes in, definitely by 10-15. Also with GHB there always seemed to be more of a "window" I guess you could call it where I would recognize that I passed the point of sedation that will knock me out(I find 99% of the time GBL but GHB more often elicits an odd feeling where you suddenly feel dizzy/extremely sedated and for me unconsciousness almost always happens within 5 minutes of that feeling). Plus with GBL you would have to assault them pretty quickly unless you dose them really high as I find GBL knock outs never lasted more than an hour and a half(this was always with extremely high doses)and more around 30-45 minutes. Maybe it lasts longer for others but I would kinda doubt it unless once again higher levels are used. I'm from the US though so I don't really know exactly what the term "cordial" to mean except when your treating someone well, is that a drink containing ethanol? I've never tasted them mixed together so that may well be whats helping dull the taste for you as I would actually imagine the tastes/textures of ethanol and GBL mixing and making it a bit less noticeable.

cordial = sugar flavour base that you mix down with water to drink.

It'd be awesome if you could try and drop a few 'enters' or 'returns' after some full stops in some of your post, it makes it so much easier to read. :)

Cordial isn't alcoholic. I actually did a search for it to find its US name and apparently it isn't generally isn't sold there. It's a concentrated fruit flavour, you mix a little bit with water to make a drink. Like kool-aid I guess but it's a liquid, not a powder. It's very strong, so it disguises the g taste well, IMO at least.

Poledriver beat me to it ;)

Police close investigation into drink spiking and sexual assault - Jindabyne

Sex Crimes Squad detectives investigating a reported drink spiking and sexual assault at Jindabyne earlier this month have closed the investigation after confirming it as a false report.

A 21-year-old woman had told police she was drinking at a hotel on Kosciusko Road, Jindabyne, about 10.30pm on Friday 3 August 2012 when she was befriended by a group of males.

The international tourist reported leaving in a taxi with two men and waking later in bushland having been sexually assaulted and robbed. She told police she believed her drink had been spiked.

Sex Crimes Squad detectives formed a strike force to investigate the incident and conducted extensive inquiries, but have now ruled out the incident as a false report.

The woman has told police she fabricated the incident and has withdrawn her complaint. For operational reasons, the woman will not be charged. She is expected to leave the country in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, detectives are continuing their inquiries into a separate sexual assault reported to them two days earlier.

A 41-year-old woman was drinking with friends at a hotel on Kosciusko Road in Jindabyne about 9.30pm on Wednesday 1 August 2012 when she met a man and went to a nearby residence for a drink.

A short time later, a number of men tried to enter the room and she tried to stop them. She passed out for a period of time and when she regained consciousness she was being sexually assaulted.

The woman left the premises and managed to get a taxi home. A friend then took her to Canberra Hospital for medical assistance.

Detectives have formed Strike Force Mackintosh to investigate this incident and are renewing their appeal for public assistance.

Are you insane? GBL tastes like shit put with ANYTHING. not to mention even diluted you can smell it over alcohol etc.

I've not once been able to ingest GBL without wincing badly or dry retching.
