Widespread spiking of drinks with date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol and GHB is an "urban legend" fuelled by young women unwilling to accept they have simply consumed too much alcohol, academics believe.

A study of more than 200 students revealed many wrongly blamed the effects of a "bad night out" on date-rape drugs, when they had just drunk excessively.

Many are in "active denial" that drinking large amounts of alcohol can leave them "incoherent and incapacitated", the Kent University researchers concluded.

Young women's fears about date-rape drugs are so ingrained that students mistakenly think it is a more important factor in sexual assault than being drunk, taking drugs or walking alone at night.

The study, published in the British Journal of Criminology, found three-quarters of students identified drink spiking as an important risk – more than alcohol or drugs.

More than half said they knew someone whose drink had been spiked.

But despite popular beliefs, police have found no evidence that rape victims are commonly drugged with such substances, the researchers said.

Dr Adam Burgess from the university's School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, said: "Young women appear to be displacing their anxieties about the consequences of consuming what is in the bottle on to rumours of what could be put there by someone else.

"The reason why fear of drink-spiking has become widespread seems to be a mix of it being more convenient to guard against than the effects of alcohol itself and the fact that such stories are exotic – like a more adult version of 'stranger danger'."

Rituals to protect drinks from contamination, such as taking drinks to the lavatory in clubs and bars and buying only bottled drinks, have become commonplace, the academics noted.

Among young people, drink spiking stories have attractive features that could "help explain" their disproportionate loss of control after drinking alcohol, the study found.

Dr Burgess said: "Our findings suggest guarding against drink spiking has also become a way for women to negotiate how to watch out for each other in an environment where they might well lose control from alcohol consumption."

Co-researcher Dr Sarah Moore said: "We would be very interested in finding out whether the urban myth of spiking is also the result of parents feeling unable to discuss with their adult daughters how to manage drinking and sex and representing their anxieties about this through discussion of drink spiking risks."

Nick Ross, chair of the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, commented: "There is no evidence of widespread use of hypnotics in sexual assault, let alone Rohypnol, despite many attempts to prove the contrary.

"During thousands of blood and alcohol tests lots of judgement-impairing compounds were discovered, but they were mostly street drugs or prescription pharmaceuticals taken by the victims themselves, and above all alcohol was the common theme.

"As Dr Burgess observes, it is not scientific evidence which keeps the drug rape myth alive but the fact that it serves so many useful functions."

Dr Burgess and his team questioned more than 200 students at universities in London and south east England.

Earlier this year, Australian researchers found that nont one of 97 young men and women admitted to hospital over 19 months to two Perth hospital claiming to have had their drinks spiked, had in fact been drugged.

there is no such thing as a fucking date rape drug. all the drugs they mention have a strong taste... ALCOHOL is the real date rape drug. and yet its the most socially acceptable one. stupid ass hypocritical people

It does seem a bit unnecessary to have rohypnol, etc, etc and risk getting caught spiking someone's drink when alcohol is more than effective on its own.

Also you're ( I say "you're" as in the person spiking the drink lol) very likely to cause the victim to die from respiratory depression. And unless yer into Necrophilia, this is no good =D

... Sorry, I just noticed the potential inappropriateness of this...
I was being serious though.

Drugs don't deserve blame - the people drinking too much of it when they shouldn't be are.

Actually, RAPISTS are to blame for rapes, not girls who drink too much.

Glad we got that cleared up.

That's a cute moral high ground argument, but this article isn't about rape, it is about people being more fucked up than they meant to/should have been and blaming it on date rape drugs. Someone then shifted that blame from date-rape drugs to alcohol. The blame for being too fucked up belongs on the person who took too much/too many drugs. Blame for rape is not a part of this discussion, but I bet it sure felt good to say those feel-good words!

If you'd like to straighten me out a bit more here, please quote the part where I said something about blame for rape.

scureto1, the word "rape" is in the title of the article. People getting too fucked up is a much more wide-ranging problem than what this article is talking about. If this article were just about people who drank too much, it wouldn't be about date-rape drugs and whether or not they're a real problem, and it'd be a much simpler article (or maybe a lot longer and more involved, who knows).

I'm glad to hear that your intention wasn't to talk about rape, but this thread is close enough to being about rape that it might as well be. Blaming people who get too fucked up *in this thread* comes way too close to blaming rape victims for my comfort. Sorry if that makes me an overreactionary, but it's kind of a better-safe-than-sorry kind of thing. The idea that you MIGHT have IMPLIED that date-rape victims are to blame for what happened to them is enough for me to say something.

"Urban legend" is also in the title of the article, but this article is not about urban legends. "Date" is also in the title of the article - the article isn't about dating. The article is about people blaming their mistakes using alcohol on an urban legend, date-rape drugs. Getting more fucked up than you or the people you are with can handle is always a bad idea. Getting raped as a result is tragic, and of course not the fault of the victim, but that doesn't retroactively change the fact that it was a bad idea to get that fucked up in the first place in that situation. Acknowledging that as a fact and telling it to someone who has just been raped are totally different ballgames, of course, as a matter of compassion and tact.

A key point of this article is that people believe the risk comes from a mysterious "other" that they can protect themselves from by covering drinks and whatnot, leading them into a false sense of security in drinking as much as they'd like as long as they ensure that it doesn't get spiked. That is a bad assumption to have, and it is neither insulting nor insensitive to say so.

I dont know if "urban legend" is the correct term but sure it has become a handy excuse for girls who got too drunk and woke up next to a stranger, rather than take responsibility for their mistakes it is very convenient to say they were drugged and raped.

myth my ass. i have a friend who had her drink spiked in a bar just a few weeks ago. her friends took her to an ER and they did find rohypnol in her system. and a creepy guy at the bar kept offering to help her home when it was kicking in; pretty much textbook urban legend style.

I've been saying for who-knows-how-long that alcohol is the main date-rape drug. Although I agree that the person to blame is truly the actual rapist, but the fact of the matter is that if someone wasn't super-impaired, then they would be able to tell that the guy was a creep to begin with. I would imagine that it is actually quite rare that people get something "put in their drink". If you drink enough, then you will pass out for a while, and anything can happen to you. No offense to anyone who has had an actual rape experience, but I have a feeling that a lot of girls that scream "rape" probably fucked someone drunk as hell and then regretted it. That's a load of bullshit. In that case, I've been raped, too.

By no means is it an urban legend, but I agree with a lot of the sentiments in this thread, e.g. alcohol as the MAIN culprit in many, many cases.

I know of several people this has happened to, with Rohypnol / GHB the main culprit, and by no means was it by their own volition. Quite unfortunate. Certainly hyped by the media but still a reality...

It isn't an "urban legend" but studies in the past have shown that the vast majority of reported cases actually involved no drugs and the chicks just drank too much. Saying its an urban legend is a little overboard.
