This may be a huge stab in the dark.. but there wouldn't happen to be any Darwin based Bluelighter's out there? I have just moved up here and wouldn't mind speaking to a few people about the night culture etc here.

Thanks.

I lived up there for 6 years man, but was only a kid so I'm not sure if I can be of any help. Anything specific about the nightlife?

Hey I never come in this part of the Australian and Asia forums so I have overlooked this thread!!! It's not too old but I thought I'd dig it up... I'm from Darwin, originally was lurking mostly in the LSD - Whats going around thread and signed up to do a report on some tabs.

The nightlife up here is alright I guess... Having partied in Sydney on new years, raving in Melbourne this year, I don't think we do too badly compared to our much larger city companions!!! You may already know about our infamous Mitchell Street... It is littered with licensed venues down both sides for a few kilometers. There's pubs, nightclubs, backpacker hostels and restaurants. Beware of violence though, it happens basically every weekend and is over stupid things like looking at someone the wrong way, being too intoxicated or over girls!

I don't go pubbing very much but when I do for pre-drinks and the like, I usually frequent the Tap bar about 3/4's the way down Mitchell street. lots of young people go here, it's outdoors and the drinks and music are not too bad, mostly radio hits and house music. Monsoons down the end of Mitchell is frequented by lots of young people too, drinks aren't too badly priced but the music is pretty bad, mostly local and cover bands and in between the acts old rock music and some radio hits... Of course there is other bars like Shenanigans, Wisdoms, Kittys, Ducks Nuts, Top End Hotel, The lost arc and the local strip club called The Honey Pot, but as I said before I'm not much of a pub type :D

Now as for the nightclubs depends what music and scene your into... Me I'm a raver and I'll get to that later :) Discovery is the biggest nightclub in the Northern Territory, I used to frequent this place quite a lot last year as the music isn't too bad (House, Ministry of Sound, Remixes of Top 40) but I cant help the feeling of machoness in the atmosphere, there's plenty of Army dudes there and it feels like a big competition of who can dress the best and who can get the most chicks... The girls are very pretty though and wear clothing that leaves little to the imagination.... Violence is common complete with glassings and brutal assaults have occurred in the recent past. We had two riots within a month of each other between American sailors and our army boys last year.

The Hot Potato connected to the Tap Bar, or HP underground as it's now called is exactly that, underground. Its the most recent nightclub to open up here, I would choose to call it the hot lemon though as that place sucks ass... The music is terrible for my ears, RnB all night, particularly the radio ones, the place is tiny and gets packed, only has two bars, the dance floor has now been converted to tables and chairs for some reason (?) and the DJ booth moved to a retarded place that you can hardly see. But if you can appreciate good RnB dancing there is a really talented few that frequent the club often! Violence is less frequent here than Discovery, but be careful past the taxi rank outside the cinema on the drunken walk back to Discovery. Drunk people + lack of taxis in Darwin = Angry, Drunk people wanting to go home. Walk on opposite side of road.

Leaving Mitchell street now to Smith street around the corner and one of its side streets... This is the place I want to be! It's all up to personal choice of scene and music. First off we have Throb, the local gay bar. If you're comfortable with your sexuality and don't mind using mixed gender toilets this place is great! Violence is next to none here as I find it drives away the homophobic people I associate with senseless violence. The music is great, you'll expect to hear alternative dance music as you may hear on triple J and drinks are okayish in price! The drag shows are funny and well choreographed with live performances based on Julia Gillard, Michael Jackson and Lady GaGa! If you are homophobic and want to listen to good music I've heard you can ask for a wrist band that will tell the same sex you are straight, but could just be a rumor.

Around the corner and certainly not least we have TIME NIGHTCLUB!!! On Edmond St, my personal favorite since August 2009 when I first went there. It's the local rave club which is open roughly once per month. DJ's such as Steve Hill, Amber Savage, Alex Kidd, PHD, Hard Kandy, Bass Station have played there and on the 27th of Nov, H.S.U is playing!!! The Dress code is pretty relaxed with singlets, shorts and skateshoes being my favorite attire with the occasional donning of my phat pants :D There is 50/50 mix of people in rave gear and just normal town clothes so whatever you wear you won't feel left out! Since August 09 I've only heard of one instance of violence in the place that involved the throwing of a glass cup and the unfortunate act of violence against a girl by a dude... It's relatively safe and everyone is there for the same reason, to dance like there's no one watching and listen to some good hard dance, trance and hardstyle! Look out for me and my "krew" we are there every time dressed in high visibility singlets and phat pants shuffling our hearts out :)

Once again I can't stress how violence ridden Mitchell street is. Please be safe by traveling up and down the street in groups, avoid the taxi rank (walk to the honeypot end of the street on the right side of the road and flag down empty taxis heading for the rank) don't stare at people the wrong way. I hate to say it but a lot of the violence is due to the large army base we have here. A lot of them are nice but most are rude, arrogant and will become aggressive over pointless things such as girls, bumping into them, stepping on their feet on the dance floor etc. 100+ person riots have occurred with tasers being used and mounted police being dispatched. Glassings were common 07-08 but have died down now since the roll out of plastic cups Darwin-wide. Beer and RTD's are still served in glass bottles so the risk is still there. If anything happens just run like the wind towards the police station in the Mitchel Center building opposite Monsoons.

Not sure if we are allowed to talk about the drug scene though, if we are I won't talk about sourcing in the slightest so if someone could let me know I'll post some harm reduction information about what to avoid and where to use drugs safely etc.

That is a very comprehensive post! But no, no drug talk here I'm afraid. Go to AusDD or PM if you have to :)
