Don't clearnet vendors do this as well? This doesn't happen too often does it? Has it happened to anybody here?

This has been happening years. Before silk road it was the norm. Happened on SR too.

Big deal, has happened before, will happen again.
On the plus side, I'd rather send $20 into the abyss of the internet to never be seen again than have it taken from me violently in person (even without violence in person, saves me the wasted time at least, and the confession saves me the trouble of waiting diligently)
