Danish Designer Creates Wearable Naloxone Injecting Device
Mei Schultz
July 23, 2014

A Danish urban designer named Morten Groenning is working with the addictions department of Kings College in Denmark to create a wearable device that will make overdose antidote naloxone instantly accessible to people who use opioids. Called INVIO, the device clips on to your arm and, in the event of an overdose, injects naloxone, which can reverse the OD by binding to opioid receptors in the brain.

The gadget is still in the prototype stage, but Groenning has a clear vision of the steps he wants to take so that his product can have a big impact. His goal is for it to cost under $40
and to run primarily on body heat in order to prolong battery life.

Ultimately, Groenning also hopes to create “mini consumption rooms,” located in accessible public places and containing a camera and cheap syringes. Envisioned as green-tinted telephone booth-type spaces, these would allow heroin users to inject in greater safety—another bold step forward on the harm reduction frontier.

In the US, where drug consumption rooms and even federal funding for needle exchange remain illegal, naloxone is increasingly carried by EMTs and law enforcement officers, with lifesaving outcomes. Activists are also campaigning for naloxone to be made available in public areas like malls or movie theaters.

Would be pretty cool if he could accomplish his goals and make such a device so affordable any junkie or user could have one. But the issues that make such unrealistic, especially in places like most US states, is that Naloxone is still extremely hard for the average user to get if not outright illegal. Until there is Federal monies for needle exchanges and naloxone becomes recognized as something that is no less necessary, this is a pipe dream for us.

I have trouble copy and pasting from PDF some times so i wasn't able to get all that I want so I posted the page numbers.

NATIONAL DRUG CONTROL STRATEGY 2014

• increasing access to naloxone, an emergency overdose reversal medication; and
• working with states to promote Good Samaritan laws and other measures that can help save lives

A. Review Laws and Regulations that Impede Recovery from Addiction
In 2013, ONDCP and the Department of Education developed and released a document clarifying
restrictions on eligibility for Federal student aid related to convictions for the possession or sale of illegal
drugs.

There are allot of good things here.. some crazy ones as well.. like the anti drug vaccines.. yeah they can inject that into me when im blue. Guess they don't realize that drug use is just a symptom.. always looking for a magic bullet8(.. If this becomes a reality then the suicide rate of people given this will be very high if it prevents the addict from getting high of anything.. if it only prevents the addict from useing their DOC then people will just change to a similar substance or a analogue of the drug which the immune system does not recognize.. just another example of treating a symptom but not addressing the problem.

Also I wonder why they claim its a disease and still plan on locking people up and giving them records.. yeah that will end the stigmatism.. 8)

Chapter 4: Break the Cycle of Drug Use, Crime, Delinquency, and Incarceration

They have a few good ideas here.. but one that would likely do more than all this well intended programs, that will get all governmental up and fail utterly, cost oodles of money, and generally fail, would be to take away the number one thing preventing there reinsertion and success, why not provide a path for people to get their fucking records clear once they are well and end the criminal justice system involvement in drugs. In know mind blowing rite, whats the use of training people for jobs they will never be offered.. or maybe even stop taking them out of society for decades, so they don't need to be reinserted

So my over all opinion is that there are some great harm reduction advances here.. I like the provisions for evidence based treatment, the prevention of addiction shit made me laugh as it has never worked and will not work an addict will become an addict period, no matter how many cops you send to the schools and the churches.. the recidivism shit will fall flat on its face if people are jacketed for life with a record and cost a fortune. And since the incarceration is still in play and drugs are still illegal THE DRUG WAR IS STILL IN FULL SWING and shit will go on pretty much as it is.. the violence will still be here, the drugs will still be here, the profits will still go to the criminals, petty drug dealers who swing to support there habits will still be locked up at the same rate, the drug dealing doctors and big pharma will continue to get rich.

Recovering from a substance use disorder is often a long process, one that may require help from health
care professionals such as doctors, physician assistants, nurses, counselors, social workers, recovery
peer support counselors, and other specialists. Across the Nation, teams of health care professionals
and recovery support service providers work with patients to reduce the prevalence of substance
use disorders by providing treatment and recovery support. This effort includes the use of innovative
technologies to help individuals access substance use disorder services. These technologies range
from electronic health records to mobile health applications to telehealth technologies.

I love how they acknowledge that 70% of people useing herion today started on prescription drugs.. So we are going to put the people who addicted us in charge of saving us.. kinda figured if they new much at all about addiction 70% of us might not be here.. or we would be getting drunk like god intended. Medical record will save us.. well actually it will likely make it easier to get drugs from the pill mill doctors. Its not that they don't want us to use drugs.. they just want us to use there drugs.. after we pay them a small fortune for a little note saying its OK:p

In other words the DItM regs could put together a revised plan in an hour that makes this look as idealistic as it is. Some steps forward.. really that any bluelighter would have made a decade ago... but more of the same. Expensive FAIL in many ways.

EDIT: after reading even more.. he has not ended the drug war if anything he has increased it.. this will uterly fail like it has for forty years. Well Obama has left us with a continuing drug war legacy. GO DRUG WAR.. fucking thing is indestructable.

Saying someone will do something and getting it done, especially when it comes to congress, federal law, and something as entrenched as drug law enforcement let alone drug policy are two toootally different things.

I'm not sure I understand the post of your last post NSA, could you condense it or rephrase it or something? I mean, I guess I think I do but I'm not sure - seems like you have more to say than what I read on the face of your post. Either that or I'm crazy (or tired, probably tired, yea...).
