Hi,

my gf and I got some ketamine cut with hydrochloric acid the other day and we are concerned about the damaging side effects. we did some yesterday and have done research, so we are aware it is damaging to your nose and nasal tissues and it burns like hell.

But we are curious about does snorting HCL damage your brain?? There is very little info out there and that is what we are concerned about, not nose damage. we know ketamine does brain damage long term, but we are talking about short-term, more immediate strong brain damage, or if it is about the same as k without the HCL.

THANKS!!

I think you are confused:

Ketamine HCl is not ketamine cut or mixed with hydrochloric acid, like any regular old mixture. It's mixed and bound on a molecular level to make a new chemical:

the HCl salt of ketamine

Without the HCl or another acid the ketamine would be in a freebase form.

salt forms of drugs or other chemicals are usually much more soluble in water. There's water in your nose and the mucous membrane absorbs salt forms like ketamine HCl much better than ketamine freebase. I think the freebase would hurt a hell of a lot more.

It's possible that one has ketamine that is salted in wrong proportions and has excess HCl but it would have to be a liquid or gooey mess you couldn't snort. Since you seem to be talking about snorting it, sounds to me like it's just ketamine HCl salt, which is the most regular type there is.

There are uses for drugs in freebase form, but mostly for vaporizing them since their boiling point is lower (and hopefully lower than the burning temperature).
Smoking ketamine however is not a good idea at all.

But I digress from the point.
Unless you have a good reason to think your ketamine has actual loose hydrochloric acid in it, don't worry about a thing except well, everything you should look out for while using regular old ketamine!

Snorting ketamine is not that painful to me but you have to crush to crystals to a powder, otherwise it might be unpleasant and inadequate.

And short-term risks to your brain / brain damage from limited frequency of use has AFAIK not been proven. In some circumstances ketamine can actually protect the brain from injury. If you are using it sparingly don't worry too much over it. But mind you it is addictive!

Bumping this because Solipsis did a good job of explaining it.

And yes HCl is a gas, although it can be stored as concentrated solution in water (conc. HCl) or in other solvents.

Note that many drugs with basic amines can come as acid salts (i.e. phenethylamines and tryptamines, cocaine, ketamine, DXM, heroin, etc). In fact, most drugs have basic amines, and usually anything called an alkaloid has a basic amine in it. Drugs without basic amines cannot be converted to acid salts (i.e. THC, alcohol, GHB, Salvia)

Better living through chemistry!

As for HCl itself, its one of the least of your worries. Drank plenty of the stuff in its well-diluted form.

Hydrofluoric acid should definitely be a buzz word though ;)

Hey everyone,

wow, this is my first post on this site (just joined today) and what a great load of responses! Thanks especially to Solipsis, you answered the question wonderfully. we certainly are not chemists, but as shambles said we are working on learnin. we are now reassured and look forward to future trips ;)

cheers !

yeah and remember your stomach is ~pH 1 HCl

however, we've heard reports of ketamine that has been cut with NaCl, table salt...
