Dangers of fentanyl. Did my girlfriend almost die?

Because it kills people? Seriously I cant even begin to describe how dangerous that was. How are you not dead? You probably use a ton of opiates. This is a harm reduction thread and I will bet my ass that was a very unwise decision.

It sounds like it was in a medical situation. Fentanyl is frequently used for pre-hospital pain relief here (usually given nasally) as well as for patient controlled analgesia following surgery and during labour and delivery. It's an incredibly useful drug in a medical setting where you have reversal agents and resuscitation facilities available. 50-100 mcg an hour is a pretty standard dose during labour and delivery. That doesn't mean it's a safe dose for an opiate naive person to take without medical supervision.

I am not opiate-naive in general, to morphine, yes I am... However I have been off opiates for a very long time and never abused them to w/d.

This dose was not HIGH enough for me :P. How much does your girlfriend weigh, that's what determines hazard around 50-100mcg.

Shes 113 lbs and 5'4" pretty small ;)

Wearing the patch is relatively safe, provided that you don't nod out and fail to remove the patch while unconscious. Otherwise, it tends to kick in slowly over a long period, and you can take the patch off when beginning to get nauseated (or whatever key sign of over-intoxication you use).

But regardless, this:

yelling at her, scolding her

probably wasn't a particularly productive approach.

Again, the patch contains several MGs of fentanyl, it releases 50mcg PER HOUR for almost 3 days. So a whole patch can easily contain an overdose amount should she decide to chew it or abuse it in a fashion other than wearing it.

Ahh, yea, that's a big dose at 50mcg..

I was never completely sure how the patch worked, considering it releases that amount per hour for ??72?? hours, that's more than I thought. Definitely dangerous, I thought it was only a couple doses at 50mcg, my bad.

If you're looking for a straightforward answer. For someone that height and weight. And with no tolerance. She would have died if she had left it on for more than 12 hours probably guaranteed. But probably around 3 hours in would've been vomiting and potential for overdose/death, increasing obviously the longer time spent in contact with the skin after that. You are right to be pissed. She just played around with something that definitely would've killed her.
