Ok so as some of you know, I've been trying
to do a shot of H by myself. Since I've been
practicing, I've been successful most of
the time but today, just now, I think I
missed. I searched the site and found info
about "misses". I ran my hand under hot
water for about 5 minutes and massaged the
area.

My question is this. ... When I pulled back,
it registered really good. So by that, I
knew (or thought) I was in. Well, I had a
lil trouble pushing the plunger in. I
couldn't seem to keep a steady hold on the
syringe and push the plunger at the same time.
... Due to that, I registered again, saw
that I was still in, and put my thumb up
against the lil lip finger spot thing at the
plunger end of the needle for some leverage
and pushed it in like that. ...I didn't feel
it burn or anything like it usually does
for me if I miss while I was injecting the
H in but when I had shot it all, and pulled
it out, there was a nice lump waiting
for me. What I'm wondering, and thinking
what happened was that maybe when I carefully
switched the way I was holding it that it
fell out? I'm positive that it registered
from the get go.. Is it possible that my
vein blew? The injection site is slightly
numb and has like,..a hive I guess. I'm
keeping a hot rag on the area and massaging
it and the lump is gone for the most
part now. ... Can anyone speculate about
what mightve happened? ... I feel high
so either way, I achieved my goal. But jus
for harm reduction purposes, I'd prefer
not to miss again and am thinking that if I
can figure out what I did wrong this time, I can avoid it next time.
... Thanks yall.

the needle just probably came out of the vein while you were injecting since you said it was hard to push the plunger and hold it at the same time. this would always happen to me when i first started IVing myself. you will get the hang of it

Like OC160 said when your first starting it is difficult keeping it in your vein, holding it steady and pushing the plunger at the same time. A good rule of thumb is that if you feel resistance stop and re-register. Also while you inject if the skin balloons at all stop where you are. When you register your shot make sure you get a really good flow into the barrel and not just a trickle into the barrel.

If you blew your vein you would have had an intense pain while you were injecting. What i did when i first started was re-register half way through the shot to make sure that anything didn't happen while I was shooting the first half.

I think what happened was due to your shaky hand you most likely went through the vein so when you went to pull back, you pulled back slightly on the entire syringe making the needle go back into your vein causing it to register. Then when you went to shoot again you pushed on it and went back through. This is bound to happen until you get more experienced. You did the perfect thing putting a warm compress on it. Good luck.

I think in the interest of harm reduction it would be best for you to not shoot up on your own until you can get the hang of it. No matter what people tell you, there really is no effective way of teaching someone the correct technique on how to IV over the internet. You would be MUCH better off having someone there to show you or do it for you. Otherwise you are putting yourself at serious risk. You even stated that you allready "missed" a shot, meaning you could easily develope an abscess. And if I need to tell you the possible consequences of having an abscess than you really shouldnt be IV'ing anything.

Its in your best interest to have a "teacher" there with you. And if thats not possible....I suggest finding another ROA temporarily.

As much as I appreciate your concern James,
I do not know where you got the idea that
I've missed prior to this one time. I've never
said that in this thread or any other. On
the contrary, I've said that I was success
ful. My husband is usually here to do it
for me or supervise my doing it on my own.
I do not learn by watching someone, not every
one learns that way. And as someone from
this forum has told me, if I'm going to iv
H, then I need to learn how to do it by
myself. ... Futhermore, how I'm supposed to
"get the hang of it" without trying is
beyond me.. Last I checked, there was no
such thing as perfect iving by osmosis.
I do know the consequences of getting an
abscess and if I was constantly missing
I would refrain from trying to shoot myself.

I do realize that this is a harm reduction
site so I guess I should have expected answers
like yours. I know that noone can effectively
teach me how to shoot over the internet
but they can offer some pointers to make things
easier. Many people have, and they do help and
I do think about what is being said to me while
I attempt doing this myself. Their advice has helped
tremendously. Whether its suggested that
I don't shoot myself or not, I'm still
going to try as I'm sure half the people
here would also do. Especially since I
usually am able to without too much trouble.
This particular time it didn't go as well
as I had hoped and thought people might
be able to speculate about what I did wrong
so that it doesn't happen again. They did
offer some ideas, which are totally plausible.
Because of their ideas, I will be sure to
be extra vigilant so that it doesn't happen
again. That is harm reduction. Suggesting
that I don't do something that, as I'm sure
everyone else can see, I'm intent on doing
is pointless.

Next time I have a question about shooting
or anything else for that matter, ill
just keep it to myself. I know shooting
and missing is dangerous. Hell, for that
matter, regardless of how careful
a person is or how knowledgable they are,
doing drugs at all is dangerous. That's
just how it is when you choose to live
the type of lifestyle we all live.

A person shouldn't be made to feel as if they got
in trouble because they ask a question to
help reduce harm further. I see that all
the time on this forum. People tell other
people not to do something that you know
damn good and well their going to do anyway.
And instead of being given suggestions to
help make them safer and reduce harm, their
chastised for even having the idea to begin
with. I would be interested to know how
many people have left this forum and
forums like it for that very reason.

With that being said, I appreciate your
concern and thank you for your post. :)

How did I make you seem like you got in trouble? you need to be a little less sensitive. I was trying to help you not be rude to you, nothing I said was rude. I dont get where your attitude came from, why get all so defensive?I never said you missed prior to this time. The title of this thread is "damn, think i missed"..... I WAS referring to this time. All it takes is one time.

and chill out, I wasnt saying you had to learn by watching...someone can be there to show you and watch you do it and correct what your doing wrong, rather than have you come online and ask people over the internet what you did wrong. make sense? no reason to act like I was being rude. i was giving the best advice available to you. It IS in your best interest to have help...this is proven even more when you tell us that you usually have your husband do it...meaning HE HELPS YOU. THATS what I was talking about.

You really need to learn how to take advice better if your going to post on a forum. You asked for advice and I gave you the best advice in the interest of harm reduction...which is what our website is all about. I understand that you might still shoot up anywya...but its still important to tell you thats it would be best for you if you didnt. I would be an idiot to NOT tell you that. Seriously....calm down.

*saying that your going to be "extra vigilant" next time to make sure you dont miss is great, but my point was that it only takes ONE miss for you to possibly lose a limb. I was simply trying to give you good advice, please dont treat me as if ive harmed you in some way. You can take my advice or leave it, but please dont act as if what I said was offensive or wrong.

I think this happens a lot where someone asks advice on something that is blatantly a bad idea. To people who aren't in the situation it often seems like there is no way they can recommend something to reduce the harm of someones action when with a large amount of certainty they will cause themselves harm. Especially something like this where it is an issue of practice and musle memory I probably wouldn't have thought of having someone there to supervise you because when I think about it the only thing that comes to mind is not to practice with dope at all but instead get some saline and practice with that until you can do it with your eyes closed. Even if we can tell you without a doubt what went wrong because proper IV technique is something that requires a lot of work to become proficient at extravigilence isn't going to overcome lack experience. If you wanted to explain your technique (angle of entry, direction of needle in relation to blood flow, which vein/veins is/are being used, etc.) we can probably give some extra advice but at the moment we don't have quite enough to go on.

agreed. now all we gotta do is get the OP to understand that without her getting all defensive and upset.

OP...
Get a few thin skinned oranges and a bottle of water. fill the syringe as much as you would for dope. place the orange over the spot on your arm where you'll be trying to hit so as to mimic shooting as much as possible.Practice one-handed pushing through the skin and feeling for the membrane of the actual fruit inside. this is actually very similar to feeling a needle break through the wall of the vein. stop the instant you feel this break-through and go through the motions of registering and pushing the plunger the way you would on your arm without moving the needle at all. repeat as often as needed.

this is less painful that practicing on your own arm.

ha.....ive never heard of people doing this, but since i havent tried it i cant say if it wouldnt work. it actually sounds like it might actually help someone. Of course you should make it clear that they shouldnt use the same needle to use in there arm as they used on the orange. Its sad but you have to say that because there are actually people who wouldnt think about it.

Great advice I have heard that is how RNs learn before seeing patients. The only other thing to do is practice with saline but that can get painful and you can still damage viens and your arm if you fuck up bad enough. But overall it will take you awhile to get the hang of it I missed a shot the other day and I have been IVing for 2 years :|

Personally I taught myself how to IV from watching other people, and I had mastered it by my third try. No joke. But I have witnessed MANY MANY other people who have a very hard time IV'ing themselves, even though they have veins all over the place like a goddamn map. I noticed that girls especially have a hard time IV'ing. I cant tell you how many girls I know that have there boyfriend shoot them up for them. I dont understand.....do you think its just because women naturally look to men for support and assistance in other areas of life so that carries over into this scenario, or do you think women actually have something wrong in there brain or something that causes them to be less likely to understand semi-complex tasks that involve motor-skills?? I think its the former.

LOL james, you really have a way with the ladies around here.

well aren't you hot shit! You're very special indeed.

as far as your question about women, I think it springs from something a little less misogynist - I think women have a lower tolerance for pain in most cases, and have a harder time inflicting pain on themselves because of it. Personally, I was taught by a woman. She got all pissed off when I started hitting myself because she was totally obsessed with the whole ritual. she loved everything about IVing.

I cant tell is your being sarcastic or not?....anyway, I dont think im hot shit I just happen to be good at IV'ing.

Also...I dont hate women, and my statements didnt suggest anything like that. Its a fact that many women "rely" on a man or somehting similar to that. Many women prefer it that way...some dont and are independant and thats great, but the fact is, its human nature for women to want/need a mans help. So please dont call what I say "misogynist".....that sounds kind of ignorant to me. if what i said is "misogynist" than the world is too.

How can you not tell he was being sarcastic? Lol

Im just not good at picking up on peoples "hints" over the internet. So if someone posts something to me that has a meaning other than what it litaraly states......more than likely I will not catch on.

LOL james, you really have a way with the ladies around here.

Im really having a hard time understanding all your posts directed toward me so please either post in a way where I actually know what your saying/meaning, or dont post at all.

our threads and forums are clogged up with people being sarcastic for no apparent reason other than trying to be rude like you have been doing to me lately....I was merely letting you know that, firs of all, its against our rules to treat someone sarastically, and secondly, your wasting space becuse your not HELPING anyone.....all your doing is wasting posting space, wasting time, and causing confusion....all for the sake of being able to "be sarcastic".....this is not the website for that.

Im not being rude, im simply tryig to stop someone from wasting my time and everyone else who is a member of this websites time....and prevent you from even further breaking the rules. I wish you good luck and hope you get my point and leave me alone unless you have a valid issue I can help you with.
