Doctors suspect synthetic drugs in about 40 overdoses at area hospitals

ynthetic drugs are being blamed for about 40 overdoses Thursday and Friday at area hospitals, doctors say.

Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas reported about 20 cases, and Parkland Memorial Hospital said it had seen about 18 victims.

No deaths have been reported.

Dallas police said they were investigating reports of synthetic marijuana overdoses and had interviewed two patients.

Synthetic marijuana does not show up in drugs screenings, but doctors say they suspect synthetic drugs were the cause of symptoms, including psychosis and extreme agitation.

Dr. Jim d’Etienne, who supervises Baylor’s emergency department at Baylor, said most patients arrived in ambulances and some had to be sedated.

Most of the patients who were hospitalized have been released, he said.

Dr. Stacey Hail, a Parkland emergency physician and toxicologist, said some patients have been so aggressive they’ve had to be restrained.

In Austin, 15 people were treated Wednesday and Thursday for synthetic marijuana overdoses,

lol there is sooo much wrong with the world these days, people can't even get stoned with out going to the ER.

Synthetic marijuana, what a joke.

^ Not sure what you mean, exactly.
Synthetic cannabinoids are not a joke - they are really troublesome and worrying drugs.
Their production is unregulated, and most are made by labs in China. Maybe they made a mistake with this batch?
Their effects are unstudied, and many could easily be carcinogenic.
They can be incredibly strong, since a) unlike cannabis, many (most or all?) are full cannabinoid receptor antagonists and b) there is no way of knowing if the cannabinoids were sprayed evenly on the plant matter in a packet of Spice etc, or how strong the manufacturers wanted it to be, so it is easy to use too much and freak out.
Maybe you knew all this and said "what a joke" for exactly that reason, meaning something like "how ridiculous that people use such things"?
But I didn't know if you said it to mean that you believe that people who use synth. cannabinoids are overreacting and actually there is no danger, so it is ridiculous to go to the ER. (An overdose on synth. cannabinoids can be pretty terrible, btw.)
So I had to make sure that this is clear.

It would not surprise me one bit it someone was using something like A-PVP in their "blend" to make it much more addictive than just the cannabinoids. I'm pretty sure this has happened. I remember reading about one with phenazepam. Synthetic cannabinoid overdose sucks but it's usually over pretty quick and the danger is more perceived (IE a panic attack.)

But when nobody knows what the fuck they're even taking- who knows?
