We are so soft on justice that Alex Livingstone was lucky to get a prison sentence at all

'It’s pathetic', drug addict thief Alex Livingstone raged at the magistrate, with righteous wrath. 'You should have given me longer than that (eight weeks sentence). Where’s the sense in that? I’ll be as much danger to the general public in eight weeks as I am now'. An offender escorted from court for complaining his sentence is too lenient is the stuff of satire.

It’s a better joke even than the judge who let Pete Doherty walk free from Court though she knew his pockets were full of heroin that he’d some how forgotten about. Rumpole would have sympathised with the pathos of it. But for the final salvo fired at the magistrate: 'You need to get a grip and do your job properly.'

Cannabis is the most ‘de facto decriminalised’ of drugs. It is a disaster for children, whether or not they go on to acquire an expensive and destructive heroin habit. Nipping cannabis use in the bud early on, robustly, Swedish style, might be the most effective early criminal intervention we could invest in to bring our prison population down in the longer term. Ken Clarke should visit and consider.

It might too have forestalled Alex’s rage at not getting the sentence he finally recognized he needed, at far too late a stage in his criminal career.

Homeless people looking for 3 hots and a cot for the winter (except it's now the spring over here, so idk...).

(Yeah, I realize it's getting warmer and am also confused.) I bet his new upper-tier drug source will be there in 9 weeks.
