A vaccine against heroin addiction could be ready for human use in just five years. Mexico's Health Secretary Salomon Chertorivski said the Government had patented the treatment after successfully testing it on addicted rats. 'The next step is testing on humans,' he told reporters on a visit to the border town Ciudad Juarez.

He said the breakthrough, made by scientists at the National Institute of Psychiatry (INP) had far-reaching implications. 'It is going to be a process that will still take at least five years work,' he said. 'And it’s not only heroin… that’s what’s been patented so far but we’re advancing rapidly on cocaine and methamphetamines.'

This reduces the impact of the drug 'hit' that has a similar effect to a rush of endorphins.
Experiments on rats addicted to heroin found the cravings disappeared as a result because it reduced the desire to take continual doses."

Cool. Now all they have to do is make the injection a time-release implant that you have to get upon birth, along with an RFID chip in your brain stem.
 
They have been talking about this now since i can remember reading about it. I think they have done some trials before like this have they not? I can't quite remember if they did or not but whatever if they did it failed.

You can't block the effects of opioids as the person would be fucked if they got hurt not to mention what it may do to a persons brain on it's own. Plus who's to say synthetic opioids like super strong fent analogs wouldn't break right through that barrier?

Money would be much better spent on treating addiction rather then trying to come up with panaceas to stop it from happening in the first place. It's not going to work so give it up already!

If heroin were once again legal, gee I don't, who would really give a shit?

The anabuse pill for alcohol does not work. It makes people sick if they drink, and ergo, suicidal.

I like my TV in color.

Yes, of course it does... A lot of people have pain which only responds effectively to opiates.

Besides, these vaccines aren't treatments for addiction at all, stopping the drug from working without treating the underlying problems means they'll just find another chemical to self medicate with. Instead of junkies you'll have crackheads or alcoholics, hardly an improvement.

You make a good point on what another major problem would be. Ok i can't judge anyone on drug use as Ive done most of it but are people addicted to crack or IV coke or alcohol any better then being addicted to opiates? I have traveled a small bit down the hard road of coke use, a blown alcoholic and i have been heavily hooked on IV dilaudid as well as morphine. Out of those addictions opiates have been the least damaging by far. Even if i am in withdrawal i can tough it out and do whatever i need to do. I never nod these days unless i take a fair bit of benzos and mix them with diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine or dimenhydrinate to potentiate the opiate. Plus i like to take opiates in order to do things not to nod out all fucking day.

With coke or rock all i wanted to do was sit in my room and shoot coke or smoke rock until i had no more money or couldn't justify fronting anymore gear. With alcohol i was a fucking mess. If i had only had a few beers (we don't really call it drinking here until you hit about the 12 pack mark) i was ok and able to function but more often then not id end up blind drunk.

In the addicts i have talked to most have some underlying issues. They shoot morphine because they find it helps their depression and it is the same with alcohol, coke, amphetamines, etc. People who want to get high to relieve the drudgery of their lives are always going to find some chemical to abuse.
