Student, 20, dies after taking legal high 'mexxy' a month before ban comes into force

  • New ‘legal highs’ are hitting Britain’s streets every week
  • MXE: a legal form of ketamine that makes 'everything like Alice in Wonderland'
  • Shop sold MXE at £10 for 0.2g of powder and £8 for one of the 'maxi' pills
A coroner has called for tougher laws on ‘legal highs’ after a 20-year-old student took one and died just one month before it was outlawed. Tragic Grant Mace was found dead in the sea after taking methoxetamine - known as MXE or mexxy - billed as a ‘safe’ alternative to ketamine. Grant, a first year robotics student at the University of Plymouth, died after taking the hallucinogenic drug on March 4.

Tragically MXE was made illegal just four weeks later on April 5, the inquest in Plymouth, Devon, heard. Just four weeks after his death it became the first drug banned by the Government under a new temporary class drug order. This week anti-drug campaigners have warned a new ‘legal high’ is hitting Britain’s streets every week.

Why is it in the news that somebody died 7 months ago? Especially since it sounds like its talking about one of the two boys that died that all the papers were talking about?

Just to put things into perspective...

Drowning appears to be the overwhelming cause of death associated with recreational aquatic activity with alcohol detected in the blood in 30%–70% of persons who drown while involved in this activity. The few relevant studies on degree of increased risk suggest persons with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 g/100 ml have about 10 times the risk of death associated with recreational boating compared with persons who have not been drinking, but that even small amounts of alcohol can increase this risk. The population attributable risk seems to be in the range of about 10%–30%.

3 drownings with MXE in blood means it gets banned. 10%-30% of drownings with alcohol in blood means alcohol is still OK.

Wtf I hate when fucking idiots fuck up new legal drugs for everybody by dosing too high or not be able to handle there shit or just acting a fucking fool.

MXE is metabolised fairly slowly and would be detected in the blood perhaps 7 days or longer after last using it. Considering the popularity of MXE in UK, it's fair to say a good number of drownings that occured while sober would be marked as 'drowning by MXE' by the coroner after seeing the MXE metabolite test results.

Regardless, this is all in the U.K. where it is already banned. Nothing new can come out of this.

Though it's tragic these people passed away under it's influence, it's still not a rational reason to banned a substance for a persons misuse of it.

So far it's remained off the radar and news sites here in the states. I think it's had one major article since it's release on the market.

I'm glad it's not getting banned here in North America just yet. A few new Dissociative RC's being released in the near future regardless but I think we can all agree that MXE has a beautiful mystical experience to it that no other drug has yet to match. The aura and experience it gives in medium to high doses can only be described as being on par to the same beauty that comes from a high dose of needlepoint acid. Though two different types of psychedelics, both drugs are equally beautiful and I've yet to experience a chemical that rivals these two substances.

Weird, LSD and MXE... I consider those two of the poorest psychedelics, have little to no interest in them.I can think of dozens of better psychedelic and dissociatives.

Really? I think I rank these two so high because of the beauty and introspection they provide.

LSD is especially introspective but MXE blew my mind when I discovered how introspective and naturally psychedelic it is for a dissociate.

I find MXE totally lacking in psychedelia - it's all the side effects of ketamine with none of the trip. LSD is more of an anxiogenic deleriant than psychedelic for me at high doses, and boring/generic at low doses.

DOC, AMT, 2C-T-7, TMA-6, 2C-C, 25D-NBOMe, MDA, S or racemic ketamine, 4-MeO-PCP, shrooms, 4-AcO-DMT, 4-HO-MET, 4-HO-DIPT are all preferable psychedelics to LSD or MXE for me. I even consider my first and only hawaiian baby woodrose seed trip I took shortly before my first LSD trip to be more introspective and profound than any LSD trip taken since.
