Senseless in Seattle: Hundreds of pot smokers light up Washington after midnight countdown to state legalizing marijuana

  • Laws decriminalizing cannabis in Washington took effect at 12am today
  • The state is the first, alongside Colorado, to legalize the drug
  • Federal law still does not recognize the state law making it punishable on federal grounds
  • Analysts estimate millions in tax revenue could be profited from the drug
  • Joint legalization comes with state's legalization of same-sex marriage

With not an arresting officer in sight crowds of smiling people lit joints under Seattle’s Space Needle on early Thursday morning celebrating marijuana now legal under Washington state law. Hundreds gathered at Seattle Center for a New Year's Eve-style countdown to 12am, when the legalization measure passed by voters last month took effect. When the clock struck, they cheered and sparked up in unison. A few dozen people gathered on a sidewalk outside the north Seattle headquarters of the annual Hempfest celebration and did the same, offering joints to reporters and blowing smoke into television news cameras.

'I feel like a kid in a candy store!' shouted Hempfest volunteer Darby Hageman. 'It's all becoming real now!' Washington and Colorado became the first states to vote to decriminalize and regulate the possession of an ounce or less of marijuana by adults over 21. Both measures call for setting up state licensing schemes for pot growers, processors and retail stores. Colorado's law is set to take effect by Jan. 5.

The widespread use of marijuana by hippies and Vietnam war protesters from San Francisco to Woodstock exposed the falsity of the claims about marijuana leading to violence, according to academics. In 1972, a commission was appointed by President Richard Nixon to study marijuana. The commission said marijuana should be decriminalised and regulated. Nixon rejected the idea but a dozen states in the 70s went on to eliminate jail time as a punishment for weed arrests.

Cannabis has always increased my senses and awareness. If they were going to say "senseless in seattle", they should have written a story about injecting black tar heroin, or severe benzodiazepine abuse. Then the title could actually fit, a little.

Other than the title it's a surprisingly sympathetic article. Maybe they're all lighting up at the DM offices too :)

"Wait, man...they'll just know we're baked if they read it like this. We better put a sentence at the end..."
"Nah man, what about the people who don't finish the article?"
"Yeah, you're right... we better put something that sounds like we are against marijuana in the title, for all the people who are too lazy to read the actual article..."

In the video on that page, it shows people smoking weed after the countdown. But can anybody tell me what kind of pipe the guy at the end is smoking? It's like a pipe that has water in it but it's not like any bubbler I've seen.

I want one.
