In the autumn, Channel 4 is to broadcast a programme called 'Drugs live: the Ecstasy Trial' in which volunteers (contestants?) will be given either MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, or a placebo. Then they will be monitored by Professor David Nutt, formerly the previous government's drug tsar. He will observe the effects.
What on earth for? Surely he could go to a rave in order to see the effects of Ecstacy any day of the week.....Ah, now I get it, he's doing an important clinical trial. Channel 4 want to find out, in a carefully controlled independent survey, if Ecstasy has potential medicinal benefits, without significant harmful effects in small doses. So the taking of an illegal drug on television is not a gimmick: it's science.
