I reproduce here another testimony from a former user of cannabis, which I think is relevant to the mental health question :

'After reading the article on your blog today, I feel more confident about sharing my experiences. I can relate entirely to the story told by the former cannabis user. I am only 21, but already feel that it has had a negative impact on me - something which suggests to me that harm can be caused by the drug even with moderate to little use. I went to university in 2009, and a number of my friends who I made there would often smoke it. In the course of around 8 months, I used it a number of times. By the time second year arrived, I suffered from extreme anxiety in almost any social situation, including lecture theatres, concerts and parties, and was filled with dread whenever I thought about the future. In the end I used beta-blockers for a year to control the anxiety, despite my doctor's suggestion that I use antidepressants (that's an issue for another time). Thankfully I realised early that there could be a relationship between the drug and my mental wellbeing, and as such have not smoked it since the summer of 2010. The year that followed was undoubtedly the worst of my life, due to the extreme anxiety and unhappiness which I was experiencing.

'This means I share your belief that advocates of legalisation are "selfish." My experience has taught me that much. Many have not yet suffered the negative consequences of the drug, and even of those who have do not think that there is a relationship between usage and mental health.

This has nothing to do with mental illness and much more to do with another sob story about some over priveliged kid who didnt treat cannabis with respect and wonders why his subjective reality is compromised.. maybe if he'd paid attention in school or made better decisions about his substance use he wouldnt wind up on some jackasses blog. i feel no sympathy for him, as everyone needs to figure out for themselves what does and does not work, no ones gonna do shit for you

I especially like the thinly veiled implication that all cannabis users are walking a tightrope over a chasm of insanity. (Aren't we all?)

yeah and yeah.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean anyone has to use it, everyone has a choice, same with alcohol and tobacco products and same with advice from a GP or shrink bout what drugs should be taken to treat any disorder.

Just because there is shit food available to purchase that is quickly cooked, fatty and cheap doesn't mean I have to buy it etc etc.

In the course of around 8 months, I used it a number of times. So he was 21 and used pot 'a number of times' and then started to suffer extreme anxiety? Isn't it entirely possible that smoking weed a 'handful' of times wasn't the only reason, or the reason at all behind the anxiety?

If you really think it's (or anything) is majorly detrimental to your health or wellbeing don't doit, but it sure as hell doesn't mean others shouldn't have to go with out it, as alot of people can obviously use it responsibly and not have major anxiety issues. I personally used it for 10 + yrs, and quite heavily at stages, and even though I don't smoke weed now (cos i cant get any or its too expensive etc) I never had any anxiety issues. I can only speak for myself I guess (and YOLO).. hehe
