The legalisation of drugs would be a disaster. Consider the present situation concerning cigarettes. There is a vast black market in contraband cigarettes that exploits the high taxation levels on cigarettes in the UK. Criminals are just as happy to import cigarettes as canabis or cocaine for one simple reason: there’s money in it.
Consider now the situation with drugs. Drug users come into two categories: naives and addicts. There is no category labelled ‘recreational user’. All mood-altering substances damage the clear functioning of the brain. In high doses they damage the brain itself.
The law has a confused place in our society where drugs are concerned. In approximate numbers in the UK, nicotine kills 300 people a day, sugar kills 200 people a day, and alcohol kills 100 people a day. Yet all these substances are legal. All the illegal drugs together kill approximately 15 people a day.
Understandably, addiucts clamour that the law should be changed. In practice the law could be used as a very useful diagnostic tool. Addicts change their behaviour only when they are in pain. When the pain is taken away by families believing that love is a sufficient prevention mechanism or by well-meaning welfare services, judges or politicians, the problem is perpetuated.
