The academic whose teenage daughter held a party where a friend died after taking drugs has contributed to a study which claimed cannabis improves the mind.

Brian Dodgeon, 60, is a research fellow at the Institute of Education, part of the University of London.

Issy had become addicted to social networking websites. On some of them, she claimed to be 21. On one she wrote of her life: ‘It’s drugs, it’s sex, it’s family and every minute I make mistakes.’

Teachers are said to have noticed that she had become increasingly fixated on internet accounts of celebrity drug-taking.

Mr Dodgeon’s friends have expressed disbelief that the drugs in the house might have belonged to him. Wherever they came from, one boy at the party reportedly urged the others not to take the pills because no one knew what was in them but ‘they had been drinking heavily and wouldn’t listen’.

Issy is thought to have taken two ecstasy pills. The same boy who had begged her not to take them found her foaming at the mouth and crying that she was ‘burning up’. At around 4am, she suffered heart failure and stopped breathing. The boy phoned 999 and tried to resuscitate the girl, following instructions from the operator on the phone. But by then it was too late.

Might it all have turned out differently if Beatrice’s parents hadn’t taken the fateful decision to leave her alone with her friends? It is a question which will surely haunt all those involved in this tragic tale for ever.

Why not just write: "Here at the Daily Mail we will decide what to do in a situation after it has already happened!"

This is surprisingly balanced by the daily mail's standards...

Is it just me or does Dailymail seem smug about this? kind of like they're thinking "haha, he said cannabis is good for you yet someone close to him died from taking drugs!"
In the very least, the average daily mail reader will react that way. and DM no doubt knew this. Talk about media manipulation...

I don't see why they have to point it out at all..

^ Yeah really, that sounds like something they would do, just put in facts completely irrelevant to the article at hand. "Local man who farts in church discovers cure for cancer"

Hehe, I kinda doubt it's even a fact though, the guardian wrote:
The academic, whose research subjects have included health inequalities and alcohol consumption patterns, was bailed to a date in June.

Which sounds much more accurate looking at his 3 papers on pubmed. I'd love to see that report, it probably says something more like, "given certain socioeconomic factors, cannabis use was found to slightly extend life-expectancy."

Does the girl's overdose on ecstasy somehow discredit the academic's studies on cannabis? What is the Daily Mail trying to say? 8)
