"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
Four-year-old Cash Hyde's brain cancer is back a third time, but this battle will be different.

His parents have decided to fight it on their own terms: at home, with marijuana oil and an all-natural diet.

The Hydes have had their share of heartache and hospitals. Cash has gone through six rounds of high-dose chemotherapy, three bone marrow transplants, stem-cell rescue, he's done proton radiation. Doctors have asked his parents to shut off life support four times. Now his tumor is at 2.5 centimeters, and the prognosis isn't good.

Cash's laugh has persisted through more than two years of pain.

Mike Hyde, Cash's dad, said, "After he had his IV line placed and we came home, he said, 'no more pokes.' Cashy, you want any more pokes?"

"Nooo," Cash answered.

Hyde said the medical treatments have taken the family thousands of miles from home. "And put Cashy through more pain, torture and treatment than any kid should have to endure, and as a family, we decided for his third battle that we will stay right here in Missoula. We will fight it as a family, as a community with natural alternatives."

The Hydes have been going against Montana's medical marijuana repeal to give Cash a daily dose of cannabis oil through a feeding tube.

Even this "natural" treatment isn't cheap, especially since Montana amended most of the medical marijuana law approved by voters in 2006, making it more difficult to obtain a card and find a dispensary.

The Hydes are now struggling to find people willing to break the law and sell them the oil on Cash's behalf. The family believes the cannabis and a natural diet is Cash's only hope at recovery.

"We want Cashy forever. But we're not willing to put cashy through endless torture to keep him here for another month," Hyde said.

The Hydes are proponents of marijuana as medicine, and want to see the laws changed.

Cannabis's potential to treat cancer is wonderful, but really self-medicating for cancer is just dumb. You don't have any way to know if it's working until it's too late. Cancer is not like other diseases for this reason. You might start feeling better for a while and then you'll suddenly get sick and be dead in two days.

Also chemotherapy is given as a cocktail for a reason: tumors will basically always become partially resistant to whatever you throw at them, and using several drugs can attain efficacy that a single drug will not give you.

Let them do as they like. They have tried other ways by the sounds of it. The poor kid and family.

But the boy has been through every type of radiation and chemo multiples times, and it hasn't worked.
Doctors have asked his parents to shut off life support repeatedly.
Should the parents trust those doctors, and allow their son to die?
Is that less "dumb" than trying cannabis as a last, desperate attempt to save their son's life?

thats a pretty conceited opinion for someone that i assume doesnt have cancer and certainly is older than 4 years old.

Its not like the chemo is going to do shit the kids going to die one way or the other. Like his mom said

Think about that thats his mother saying that think of the pain of watching your 4 year old die of a horrible disease. I trust that she knows whats best for the kid. I dont see how anyone can question her decision or her right to make it.

Honestly they don't know what will happen. Despite all of the scientific research on and techniques to cure cancer, its still poorly understood.

The kid should be able to use constituents in weed if he (his parents) want to, but honestly I would go for several different approaches at once.

Man, I feel really bad for this family, and even worse for the child...

But on the topic of his family using medicated oils, I honestly don't understand what the big deal is, really. I mean, I guess I could kind of see the moral dilemma some people might have, because he IS four years old.... But on the other hand, with just the procedures and radiation and chemo, not to mention the transplants listed above, I'm almost positive he's been on different medications that are worse for his body. I could understand peoples gripes a little more, if he was a four year old SMOKING marijuana just to be medicated. But he's not. He's just simply being given an oil into his feeding tube.

If giving that child a bit of oil makes him feel better for even fifteen minutes, then I think it's worth it. Because for those few minutes, he may not be in crippling pain, he might actually even feel good for a few minutes. Let him have that. Because from the sounds of it, he obviously can't enjoy any activities or anything else that any normal four year old can do.

If the oil is helping more then the narcotics he's [probably] prescribed, where's the damage? His narcotic intake is lessened, and he's finding alternative methods. & I hate to say this, but unless they discover something quickly that can help this child, he's not going to live very long. Now hopefully I'm 100% wrong about that, and something happens and he grows up to lead a normal, happy life. But we're being realistic. So let him have as much enjoyment out of anything he can get it from.

I know the families resources are probably tapped, because none of that is cheap, even with the best insurance available, but if MMJ is actually working for this child, and he's benefiting from it... I wonder why they haven't considered relocating to a friendlier state. Where it would be easier for him to get the medicine he needs, without friends and family risking their freedom to procure it? I know that sounds highly unrealistic, but still...

Yeah, people can speculate about what they might do in this situation... but that's all it is.

But nine times out of ten, a parent will do anything to help their child.

Not being able to get Cannabis legally for whatever medical reason is absolute bullshit. My stomach is all fucked up and although my doctor has no trouble prescribing me opiates for pain i can't even get marinol prescribed to me because "we don't know the side effects of weed" 8) . Yeah but we do know that metclopramide can cause tardive dyskinesia and i still get that med which does me no good!

I feel really bad for this poor kid. Imagine being 4 years old and having to spend the last bit of your life sick as fuck? Christ i really hope they leave this family alone and don't make a example out of them or something. If Cannabis helps the kid then that's better then pumping him full of shit that's just going to make him sick as fuck.

What the fuck is the debate if they want to use plants to help him?

Nontoxic plants. That's the only requirement.

If they would have implemented a macrobiotic diet at birth, with marijuana as pain relief, he might have done better.

Or worse.

We don't know.

At this point, it doesn't matter. He's doomed, as we all are, but at least he'll be spared any more pain. As long as they keep the parents out of jail.

Which I believe is a topic that should be next on the chopping block.

How long before the CDP swoops in and destroys all 3 lives forever? Do we know?

I'd like to. All other 'medical' or scientific points are moot. What does social law intend for this trio?

this is pretty interesting:

Cannabinoid action induces autophagy-mediated cell death through stimulation of ER stress in human glioma cells

Autophagy can promote cell survival or cell death, but the molecular basis underlying its dual role in cancer remains obscure. Here we demonstrate that Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active component of marijuana, induces human glioma cell death through stimulation of autophagy. Our data indicate that THC induced ceramide accumulation and eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (eIF2α) phosphorylation and thereby activated an ER stress response that promoted autophagy via tribbles homolog 3–dependent (TRB3-dependent) inhibition of the Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) axis. We also showed that autophagy is upstream of apoptosis in cannabinoid-induced human and mouse cancer cell death and that activation of this pathway was necessary for the antitumor action of cannabinoids in vivo. These findings describe a mechanism by which THC can promote the autophagic death of human and mouse cancer cells and provide evidence that cannabinoid administration may be an effective therapeutic strategy for targeting human cancers.
