D.E.A. Bans Chemicals Used in ‘Bath Salts’
By ELIZABETH A. HARRIS

The Drug Enforcement Administration took emergency action on Friday to ban three synthetic stimulants used to make products that are marketed at head shops and on the Web as “bath salts,” but are actually used as recreational drugs that mimic the effects of cocaine, LSD and methamphetamine.

The emergency measure places these substances — mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and methylone — under the D.E.A.’s most restrictive category for at least a year, while they study whether they should be permanently banned. This classification is reserved for substances with high potential for abuse and no accepted use under medical supervision.

These products, sometimes called plant food, are sold in powder or crystal form under names like Bliss, Purple Wave, Vanilla Sky and Ivory Wave. Though not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for consumption, they have become increasingly popular, especially among teenagers and young adults, the D.E.A. said.

“These chemicals pose a direct and significant threat, regardless of how they are marketed, and we will aggressively pursue those who attempt their manufacture and sale,” Michele M. Leonhart, the agency’s administrator, said in a statement.

Some states have already banned bath salts, which typically sell for $25 to $50 for a 50-milligram packet. Some of the chemicals found in these products are related to an organic stimulant found in Arab and East African countries called khat, which is illegal in the United States.

Despite their innocuous sounding street names, doctors say these drugs are unusually dangerous. Users can experience severe, long-lasting paranoia — some have reported that symptom lasting for months — and bouts of extreme violence, sometimes self-inflicted. In one recent incident, a man broke into a monastery and stabbed a priest in Pennsylvania. In another, a West Virginia woman scratched at her own body repeatedly over the course of several days.

The long-term effects are unknown, but the D.E.A. considers them “potentially severe.”

Methylone is actually pretty good. That is one I will miss. I have the chance to sample it a few weeks ago and I really enjoyed it. The DEA will just see more analogues discovered. No, they are probably not the healthiest chemicals to ingest but there are certainly worse problems in the world.

Even the New York Times is repeating the "LSD" bullshit. These drugs are nothing at ALL like LSD, as anyone who has done all of them and LSD can attest. They're stimulants, with a touch of psychedelic flavour at best (in methylone and mephedrone's cases). :P

On another note... this is going to really shake things up in the RC market.

While I have no problems with these drugs themselves, I must agree something needed to be done about them. There are people out there, and I include myself in this category, who will do a little research on an unknown substance such as these before doing them. They will find out helpful things such as sleep and food are a must on these RCs. Also knowing when to quit for a while is a major help. Then there is everybody else.... These people try the stuff and it makes them feel good. So they do it and do it and do it and next thing you know theyve been up a week with little to no food and theyre at a strangers house decorating it for xmas time while theyre at work. The problem is that people were ill informed of how to properly use these RCs, the ridiculously cheap prices, and the easy availability. But like everything else in life the informed have to suffer because of the ignorant

Can anyone explain to me why this took so long? This stuff has been all over the news for the past 3 years or so. As far as I understand the DEA doesn't really need any hard justification to emergency schedule something.

Also, I understand that "bath salts" have been especially focused on in the media and so would have caught their attention. But I'm sure they have agents trolling drug boards like bluelight and monitoring RC vendors (which are incredibly easy to find needless to say). So why doesn't an agent see that say, methoxetamine is beginning to be sold on the gray market, and immediately schedule it?

Poor 2cc and MDAI :(

And the nbome's are next if you keep talking about them the way you guys do :P

seriously.

And why 2C-C? I can't figure that one out. That's one of the most innocuous 2Cs, and not even that common compared to 2CI and 2CE. It's like the DEA is just throwing darts at a board.

Imma miss my C-C snorts : (

^How on earth can you stand snorting 2c-C? Snorting any amount of 2c's is unpleasant, but the dose required with 2c-C is so damn high, I don't see how you could do it with any regularity. I did it once and my sinuses felt seared for the next few days.

2C-C burns like hell compared to most stuff. I remember the first time I tried I felt like I got punched in the nose. My face all red and puffy, eyes tearing up, wires under my desk slithering around like snakes.

But it's not bad compared to to 2C-E (aka molten glass). I usually only snorted it when I was already under the influence of other 2Cs. For some reason snorting didn't hurt at all when I was already tripping.

But although 2C-C snorts became kind of a meme between my friends, I don't recommend it since I imagine it trashes your nasal membranes.

VENDOR: Right!!! There's no more 4-MMC, Methylone and MDPV - what next?

Do the DEA really think the vendors are going to give up? Pass me the fucking sick bucket.

TAKE A NOTE FROM THE U.K!!!!

We banned all generic substituted cathinones, like over 100 of them at once; many which have never even been released. The use of cathinones continues to spread, especially in the case of 4-MMC which is now the second most used illicit substance in the UK after cannabis.

BOHHH

Second only to cannabis? Really, is that true? If so, why do Britons love shitty cathinones so damn much? I've barely even heard of people using them here.
