Megathread Cultural Appropriation and Cancel Culture Discussion

There comes a point where you may get shutdown. How did you prepare for that?
Stand your ground.

I see a simple solution to all of this... Don’t say stupid shit on social media.

The problem is cancel culture is shifting the Overton window so that people are constantly having to get caught up on what counts as socially unacceptable speech.

Common folk are increasingly being alienated by the new Nomenklatura (newsmedia, academics, etc) that is railroading society by constantly pushing new norms before people can even contemplate them.

The result of marginalizing people like this is that they feel no alternative than to resort to violence. Trump is accused of having instigated the Capitol Hill riot, but the truth is those people had already been waiting for a reason to strike at the heart of what they believe is wrong with modern society.

Slamming them as white nationalist terrorists is not the way to soothe tensions, if anything it just makes the violent cultural schism more inevitable.

No.

Id agree with you that there are a lot of more sensible trump supporters out there. And those people we should absolutely be trying to reach, trying to find common ground and get back to recognizing that we're all Americans and supposed to all be on the same side.

But the ultra trump extremists? The ones who treat him like a messiah and behave like a cult, like the ones who attacked the capital. There's nothing to be gained by trying to find common ground.

They are terrorists. They used violence for political ends, threatened to execute the vice president for following his oath, and tried to use force to install a dictator against the will of the people, that's terrorism. Calling it anything else is playing right into their hands. It is how they have little by little allowed ever more extreme behavior and thinking to grow, by taking advantage of the tolerance of others.

Terrorists go to jail. But the rest? The less extreme majority? I agree we need to be finding ways to come together. That's why I am increasingly or the view that prosecuting trump may be a mistake. That it may just be further pushing away people we need to try and reach.

There's no moral high ground left from which to decry the Capitol Hill terrorists when for most of the year, Antifa terrorizing John Q. Public was downplayed as peaceful protesting. Hypocrisy is not a good foundation for progress.

Probably not a coincidence that the Capitol Hill crowd attacked the media:

And why conservative trust in the media has eroded since Trump became prez:

trump surely bears some responsibility here?

he quite deliberately sought to sow public distrust in the media. he and his administration spent an entire first term painting anything which did not paint the president in a positive light - whether the reporting was accurate or not - as 'fake news'.

Maybe, but refer to the chart above. Republican voter trust in the newsmedia has been declining since GW. If we think of Trump as a populist then it's perfectly in character that he would be feeding the people the message that they wanted to hear.

Trump is a culmination of the loss of cohesion in society, rather than a cause.

The generation of journalists that grew up in the end days of Bush America were already naturally primed to react with antagonism towards a figure like Trump. His confrontational style played off that antagonism to appeal to his base but now the well is poisoned because brinkmanship is more politically viable a strategy than taking the high road.

Thing is, what you're describing isn't simply cancel culture. It's basically internet mob mentality. And it's far from limited to the left.

You see similar shit when feminists are attacked by mobs of right wing types online. People online are crazy and give death threats over anything.

What I'm saying is, the existence of indisputably wrong cases of internet vigilantism don't make all "cancel culture" bad.

The problem I think is when it goes from "I won't do business with you" to "and I'll also attack anyone else who does!".

Once again humans suck at being moderate.

It was self-described as cancel culture ("we need to cancel this guy") and all of the rhetoric was progressive.

I know that internet mobs aren't unique to the left but cancel culture is.

We're talking about people who want to cancel another person's life, not just their marketing presence or whatever.

i don't think that's accurate.

president trump called for a fox news reporter to be fired after she reported on the atlantic magazine story wherein trump called dead soldiers losers and suckers.

he's called for the firing of other journalists including chuck todd and dave weigel.

the company goodyear banned maga hats in their workplaces and trump tweeted an attack in which he urged people to not buy their tires.

there are similar examples related to american companies like macy's and harley davidson.

he's a walking flag waver for cancel culture which, or course, he rails against when the shoe is on the other foot, the hypocrisy and irony of which is, as ever, lost on him and many of his supporters.

Trump is in a league of his own. The left created cancel culture and they are still the main ones who utilize it.

another huge example of cancel culture on the right is all kneeling for the flag bullshit. How many athletes, teams, sponsors, entire sports leagues, etc have the right tried to cancel in the last few years?

all cancel culture is bullshit on any side. Lmao they cancelled j.k rowling for drawing a line in the gender debate. They cancelling everyone. Just all jealous fucks who never amounted to anything so they all on the train of cancel the successful people. Fuck that people should be allowed to think what ever they want to instead of the thought police coming to cancel people for their views. and if your offended go and fuck that person up like a real man or women if you cant throw hands then shut yo bitch ass mouth and stop been sensitive. if i see a racist or a nazi ill go and fucking beat them up because thats how i was raised if you cant stand toe to toe and take a fight like a man to defend your views or beat racists or nazis up your a pussy as bitch in my view. I aint going to go on social media and complain about somebody saying racist shit i will turn up and teach them lesson in respect thats how it was in the hood growing up before the internet. Now everybody is cowards who wont even confront people in person.

You're complaining right now. You're complaining about what other people think right now.

Only rather than using social pressure, your only complaint is that we don't all handle this like a bunch of inbred trailer trash.

I had a good childhood except for one cousin who had to get off on me. I was always running from that experience. Then psychedlics helped me confront it. marijuana puts me one step ahead of sodomy. Now adult life, ha, that's a different story. Written down.

Bullocks. All "the left" ever did was take your own tactic and turn it against you. Oh, and they did give it that nifty new name, I guess. Maybe it will sound more familiar to you as boycotting, or "voting with your wallet". Turnabout, as they say, is fair play. Or, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Doubt me? You should look up the Dixie Chicks; or perhaps Bill Maher... who you LITERALLY had cancelled... before trying to claim that the tactic itself originated on the left.

Like I said. They're hypocrites. They used to support businesses deciding who they serve. Being allowed not to serve gays and such.

Then when they stopped getting served, suddenly they were all for regulation.

Dishonest hypocrites.
