Megathread Cultural Appropriation and Cancel Culture Discussion

I still use Twitter to keep up with news and various other things I'm interested in. I never even hinted at cancelling it.
 
Sure seems like a lot of this controversy is from reactions to things like Netflix posters and not the movie itself.

I haven't seen it, it doesn't sound like my thing so I probably won't. But this has all the markings of a moral panic written on it. I don't trust that there's anything real behind this.

Oh and Texans are insane so until this is more than just an indictment, I don't think anything of that either. If it ever goes anywhere I might be more interested. But getting an indictment isn't a high burden. It's only probable cause. Getting a Texas jury to find probable cause likely doesn't require much.

And this just all stinks of moral panic.

I watched the whole thing. The movie poster thing was a pea sized argument compared to what happens in the actual movie.

Don't believe me? You don't have to, you can watch it yourself.

But you might not be able to if they lose their battle in court it will be cancelled from Netflix anyway.

It's not my kind of movie either. The bad press is what made me interested in watching it. It's Trump's tactic to a T.

There's definitely an argument to be made that this mysterious "Cancel Culture" that is "ruining lives" is actually only helping their business boom.
 
I just don't care enough.

Even if it actually is de facto child pornography, fine, hope it gets taken down, but I'm not canceling Netflix over it.

If I had to decide if it remains or not, if that were my job, id obviously have to watch it. But fortunately I don't. And I don't feel like martyring myself by taking the risk that I watch it and find it's all a moral panic and then have to become "the defender of child porn" in the eyes of morons.

And if it really is de facto child porn, i don't especially wanna watch that either.

Basically in no way is my life gonna be improved by touching this. :P

Well you're in this thread making commentary about the movie poster you obviously have some interest involved.

I honestly had no problem with the poster either. That's what initially peaked my curiosity. I wanted to find out if this social media influence had any validity to it so I took it upon myself to watch the movie with the mindset that these people are overreacting. I was proven wrong. The mob was right in this case. It happens.

Even if they're right. I don't particularly want to see child porn either.
 
Cancel culture is ridiculous, can't say I'm surprised though as there's way too many people online and it's easier to tear something down than build it, on line criticism isn't a real good excuse to cancel anything but it's easier again to just give in than answer critics.
 
Cancelling is the fastest way to teach the elderly about the uses of technology.




Just a joke, but it does outline some of the issues brought up here. Technology is new and scary for a lot of people.
 
^ No, even though Weinstein had a part in producing it I'd have to watch it myself to have an opinion about it.

This article does a great job explaining how we make poor excuses for artists we like and tend to ignore the others. It also does a good job at separating the art from the artist (some times it's the art that needs to be cancelled and sometimes it's the artists---it's not always both)

Larry Clark triggers the fuck out of me. I've watched his movies and I think he's super slimy but there's others who have a different perspective so. I'm not gonna call anyone a pervert if they enjoy his work.

When it's relatively minor stuff like Louis CK it doesn't bother me, but I really struggled listening to Michael Jackson for a long time. It still bothers me, particularly when he mentions children in his lyrics.
 

Parler CEO Says Service Dropped By “Every Vendor” And Could End His Business​

Parler CEO John Matze said today that his social media company has been dropped by virtually all of its business alliances after Amazon, Apple and Google ended their agreements with the social media service.

“Every vendor from text message services to email providers to our lawyers all ditched us too on the same day,” Matze said today on Fox News.

Matze conceded that the bans could put the company out of business while raising free speech issues, calling it “an assault on everybody.”

“They all work together to make sure at the same time we would lose access to not only our apps, but they’re actually shutting all of our servers off tonight, off the internet,” Matze said. “They made an attempt to not only kill the app, but to actually destroy the entire company. And it’s not just these three companies. Every vendor from text message services to email providers to our lawyers all ditched us too on the same day.”

The remarks come a day after Amazon dropped Parler from its servers, joining Apple and Google. They all cited the potential of spreading violent content on the site, which is favored by conservatives as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook.

Matze said that the services are unfairly targeting Parler. “They’re trying to falsely claim that we’re somehow responsible for the events that occurred on the 6th,” he said, the date of the Capitol building takeover by protesters.

“It would put anybody out of business,” he said of the tech bans. “This thing could destroy anybody.”

He added: “We’re going to try our best to get back online as quickly as possible. But we’re having a lot of trouble because every vendor we talk to says they won’t work with us. Because if Apple doesn’t approve and Google doesn’t approve, they won’t.”
