Does MDMA have a distinct smell? Does it vary?

I recently acquired a new batch from a trusted source (and tested it). The rocks are mostly a cloudy yellow color, sometimes even a tad bit brown and have a VERY distinct odor. It is hard to describe, almost like a chemically vanilla smell.

Anyway im not asking for substance ID because i know what i have is MDMA, i have just never had it smell so strongly. I mean sometimes it has a faint odor, but for the most part the smell is rather nondescript.

Many people will reply "Taste and smell means nothing!!! You can't tell from that!!".

But in reality, my time spent with my dealer a few years back, showed me that there is a "usual" smell, and a "usual" taste(from smelling/tasting bags of pills, and molly). The smell isn't bad actually (IMO), most of the time, and I guess "chemically vanilla" would fit it. There's also a distinct bitter taste, same with other drugs like meth, but each is a little different.

That being said it can vary by what impurities are in it. But, in well made mdma, there is a usual smell and taste. Many people aren't able to notice it, I just have a good memory for my sense of taste and smell. There's also several ways it's made from what I understand, and I'd bet it'd vary some amount between each way.

MDMA is MDMA is MDMA. All that said, I wouldn't go around recommending people guess if their pills or molly's legit and clean by the taste and smell.

Everything I have tested as MD_xx always has a similar smell. Taste is not a factor since it tastes like a chemical reaction.

i was fortunate enough to get ahold of some mdma powder (more like tiny tiny off white granulated crystals instead of flour-like) a few days ago and it had the same smell that most of the mdma iv came across in the past. Black licorise/chem vanilla/root beer barrel type of smell. not strong odor but it def was there. it was some of the best mdma i have ever had as well test fizzed/smoke a little and went straight to purple/black (marquis).....there is hope for the northeast after all folks

If it's made from Safrole, it will probably smell like black licorice

But pure MDMA is an ordorless crystal, so any smell is an indication of synthesis byproducts

This^

If it does have the aniseed smell then you could be in luck, as always a test kit is the best option

Safrole
It is a precursor in the synthesis of the insecticide synergist piperonyl butoxide and the empathogenic/entactogenic drug MDMA.

Agree with Folley, and smell alone doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to purity, a lot of chemists add that a black licorice scent to their MDMA so people think its more pure. PMMA also smells like black licorice...

it smells exactly like this....

Isn't it PMMA that is made with Anise(Anethole)?

Check out this post i found on BL from 2003

Safrole is very often used as a starting material when synthesizing MDMA from scratch. Even MDMA synthesized from MDP2P ( see thread and the x-scores came from (http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85727&r=27) ) usually contains safrole as a major impurity (0.1 -1.0%)

Impurities in Commercially available MDP2P (http://rhodium.ws/chemistry/mdp2p.impurities.html)

Although pure MDMA crystal should have no smell, many pills and powders seem to smell of safrole. Even though very small amounts may pass through some processes as unreacted safrole, most undoubtedly comes from contamination.

If the smell is more like cardamon, it is indicative of the presence of the ketone (MDP2P), the unreacted precursor to MDMA and a chemical that eats through plastic! But levels are likely to be very low, even if the smell is noticable.

During a fully legit, authorized University project involving determination of safrole levels in Camphor Laurel, a flask containing safrole and solvent was on a rotary evaporator (to suck off the solvent). Everything was going smoothly when disaster struck. A shitty vacuum line gave out, the flask was flung about, and the contents liberally distributed across the bench, up the walls, over the floor and all through the rotary evap.

A year later when back at Uni, I ran into the lab assistant who remarked that he never want's to smell, camphor, safrole, aniseed or anything vaguely resembling THAT FUCKING SMELL again!!! Ever since the spill, anytime anyone turns on his precious rotary evap. THAT SICKLY SMELL is everywhere!!

So the smell of safrole really sticks around. It wouldn't take much at all for something just sitting in a room of sassafras to smell of it.

Another not so pleasant thought is that safrole is intentionally added to pills, as people tend to relate the smell to good pills, which in principle is ridiculous, as the only real in-vivo bio-activity safrole has is as a liver toxin!

Another thing to look out for is that sassafras (85-90% safrole) may be added to pills containing essentially nothing in an attempt to fool a test. Safrole will react with Marquis and Mandelin, but the colours produced are dirty brown-black and nothing like those from a classic MDMA reaction.

As Dante mentioned, a licorice/ aniseed smell can indicate PMA, made from oil of anise. Therefore its good to get acquainted with the difference in smells from the starting materials.

MDMA - from safrole - smells like root beer

PMA - from anethole - smells like aniseed

See if you can buy a small bottle of sassafrass oil. Try your pet store - as a natural delouser, or an aromatherapy shop. Get some aniseed and compare the smells. Some people can pick between them easily, but some people just don't seem to be able to tell the difference.

I once got four similar smelling oils:

sassafras
anise
camphor root bark extract
refined camphor extract

3 people were blind folded and given the oils one at a time, being told what each was as they smelled them. Then they were each asked to smell a randomly selected oil. Only one person got all 4 correct and she said she guessed between sassafras and refined camphor extract.

Yeah... this is kind of why smell should not be used at all.

If you had a bunch of methylone sitting around even a little bit of Sassafras bark or oil or hell even root beer extract, it's probably going to smell just like MDMA

It's not hard to add a fragrance to something.. hell you can easily get Sassafras perfume and just spray that on some RCs

ive gotten really smelly mdma before, but the batch ive been using most of the time doesnt smell at all really.
That first batch i had smelt really chemically lol, its why i took up capsuling it, cos if not id be gagging in the loo at some rave lol as i take a dab.
