Heroin crossed eyes on brown

hey,

my friend keeps getting crossed eyes when they get high. the right eye is normal, the left eye looks out to the left more than normal.

they have been doing h for 5 years but only recently caught a habit in january of this year. a couple months ago they started shooting, and now they get crossed eyes almost everytime they get high. before starting to shoot they'd only got crossed eyes about three times from being really high.

it goes away when they come down a bit but it causes them to see double and reach out to things that are not there. they get very confused and stumble around a lot, so it's very annoying, and they can't ride their bike.

does anyone know what this is or what is going on? or any solutions? obviously the main solution would be to dose less

Funny this actually, i get this when I take a lot of oxycodone and amphetamines together. Don't know why it happens, but it does. I wondered why it happens to - all I've come up with is excess serotonin similar to why you cross eye on MDMA.. But I don't know about heroin.

It could be due to excessive muscle relaxation, causing the muscle behind the eye to release and freely move, that's my theory

Sometimes opioids can cause visual disturbances or nystagmus in moderate to high doses. also, cuts in street heroin as well as other non-narcotic poppy alkaloids (papaverine, noscapine) can exacerbate the issue.
other common side effects from higher dose opioid usage are tremor, sweating, chills, dizziness, nausea, low blood pressure. these are usually seen in overdose situations too.

this is not mediated by serotonin I don't think. I would be more inclined to suggest it's norepinephrine related, but the simple fact of the matter is that pure mu agonists will cause some people to go cross-eyed too.
reducing the dose is the best way to make the issue stop. as you can see it's more prevalent with IV usage then snorting, so switching roa may help too. getting off street heroin and on a pharma grade narcotic could help too, by reducing the amount of variability in cuts and other non-heroin alkaloids, and making dose measurement easier. if you are competent enough with chemistry you could try looking on erowid at how to prepare purified heroin base from the street product via acid/base extraction.

This happens to me on ALL opiates if i take a dose high enough to make me nod. I guess the only solution would be to combine it with a stimulant or just take less (but why would you want to?) .

perhaps taking caffeine, cannabis, or an antihistamine might help? unsure if adding amphetamines would make the problem better.
I think it's a pretty personally dependent thing too though. some people are vastly more susceptible to physical disturbances of opioids.

Cannabis makes this "problem" alot more prevalant, at least for me.

thanks for the replies. cannabis doesn't seem to help. best thing for them to know was that it happens to other people too. i guess they will try to do less, as they often vomit at these does too, even after 5 years, when i've only been sick a few times.

it's a common side effect. my girlfriend says it happens to her "all the time". i get it sometimes but only if i've done a lot at once. cannabis definitely exacerbates the "lazy eyes"!!

Crossed eyes are common with opioids. If someone has a lazy eye it can exacerbate it as well. Only solution I know is to do less.
