Crack & The Risk of Stroke

The types of drugs I've tried are narrowing down. I'm bored and haven't used E in over a year...I smoke KB occaisionally and no longer drink opium tea made from dried poppy pods. But I would absolutely love to experience a crack cocaine high. Just two issues to deal with. One being the difficulty of finding a source in the Connecticut area. And two- Im concerned about the risks of stroke. All I can think of is the guy on Howard Stern- Crack head Bob. Im wondering if the cause of his stroke was due to circumstances other then crack.
 
For what it's worth, most people who smoke crack don't consider the thought of "harm reduction." Yes, crack can cause a stroke in even young, healthy adults; it can also cause heart attack, cardiac arrest, fatal seizures, and other seriously toxic effects. I would stick to safer substances because crack is one drug that hasn't been that overhyped by the media, law enforcement, etc. It really is dangerous and I'm not even mentioning the likelyhood of becoming addicted to crack, which is very high.
 
Someone I know had a heart attack at 18 from smoking crack, he HAD a healthy heart too. He didn't practice harm reduction, or moderation so, shit happens.
 
I say try it. What is the worst that can happen. Maby you'll have a good trip that will blow your mind! But if you have a bad trip it will only last like 15-20 minutes. So give it a try or else for the rest of your life you will be wondering-what if?
 
Crack is safer then you think... adiction is mainly a psychologial issue and it still takes a long time before there is even a RISK of that - if yer using it to fill a void in your life it could wreck you, thats true... but this isnt going to happen overnight or even over a weekend of ABUSE ...
Now, to your question - there is ALWAYS a risk.. thats just how it is - now in the instance of a young adult having a heart attack, I find it difficult to believe that there WASNT some wacky condition that was unknown, because the reality is that crack is only a stimulant and doesnt even raise yer heart rate as much as some physical activities .. running to my car in the rain has jacked my heart rate to a hell of a lot faster then any of the times I have smoked crack or even IV'd cocaine (by far the BEST WAY TO GO!) Of course thats not scientific and I am also not the most healthy person - my diet consists 75% fast food, I smoke, and have a handicapped permit because I get winded walking from a far parking space to the entrance of a building .. I get no excersize at all and when I am on a serious opioid binge (which is about 60%-80% of the time) I will often go several days without more then a few cans of soda and something like a donught.. there was also that year where I did nothing but methamphetamine, and that period of a few months where I was shooting a half gram of glass at a time - I would say that if my heart can take it, so can yours!
Also, look at your average crackhead - if they can endure it, couldnt you? Hell, I would say that dancing on MDMA DEFINITLY gets your heart rate higher then sitting in a cold room smoking rock ever would...
But hey, you might have some freak condition and for some reason the first time you smoke crack, it kills you ...
Abra has made it sound worse then it is IMO.. as I said, if you're young and healthy there are a number of everyday things that will elevate your heart rate/blood pressure higher then a little rock .. to be exact, much like heroin, the real danger from crack comes from it's negitive psychological attributes, not physical... but still, I'm sure there are plenty of horror stories to be told (read: lets NOT reply with some story about how your boyfriend was a crack addict and beat up his mother to pawn her wedding ring for a rock)
 
hey please dont downplay the risks of crack, yea there are alot of crackheads out there that have no adverse effects.... but i know a girl that had sieszers from smoking it i mean grand mall ones. not to mention that it is HIGHLY addictive. it is an insidious drug that creeps up on you.one minuate it seems fun and recrational and the next thing you know you are strung out like a M.F. it is a known fact that cronic abuse of crack changes the chemical make up of your brain... hence the people that go off the deep end. i know i have been there and thank god i got 4 years off that shit. nothing great about it and lots of negitives associated with it... my advice never fuck with it... it is a one way street to NOWHERE!!!
 
First off Howard Stern sucks. Opie & Anthony are way better then him, so listen to them. Prolonged use of Crack can result in stroke. As will meth & coke. So if your gonna smoke crack (which i don't) your not going to have a stroke for a little while. That is unless you overdose & seizure on the crack. Then you can have a stroke...
 
i wouldn't be worried about siezuring from smoking(not saying it can't happen). i've been with people who have grand and petite malls, but they were all people who IV, and with all them it was that they were careless about the amount they shot that particular time.
 
The guy that got a heart attack from crack actually had something happen to his heart from the crack before he had a heart attack, I don't remeber what but he smoked $50,000 worth in less then a year, so it wasn't like he did it a few times and got a heart attack. Also, Stern is better then O&A, though they both are funny as fuck.
 
The acute dangers are often underestimated. The degree of vessel contriction caused by cocaine on the coronary arteries is tremedous ! (another adjective !!) It is capable of causing full thickness infarcts even when no evidence of atheroma is found (from autopsy studies). That is it can reduce the diameter of the vessel literally to zero and for several minutes!
Vasoconstriction with cocaine will cause ischaemia which can be reversible or irreversible (infarction) or incomplete as in Non-STEMI. Therefore there can be microscopic damage to the myocytes. If this occurs at a time of increased oxygen need by the heart (ie with cocaine, and secondary noradrenaline effects) where increased contractility is required and increased force of contraction, then there is an oxygen supply : demand debt, and damage occurs. This can lead to myocardial fibrosis and reduces the compliance of the LV.
Take the super fit athlete with a HR of 40 - the reason why his/her heart only beats 40 times per minute is that the body's cardiac output demand can be achieved with a lower rate (and hence a greater stroke volume). Lower resting heart rates are very efficient in terms of 'power' - energy used per work done.
With stimulant use, the oxygen supply is impeded, and the afterload is much greater. Hence the stroke volume is reduced and the efficiency of the system is lost.
Even though with training you get increased vessel density throughout muscles (including the heart) - they are maximally open with exercise by tissue autoregulation to allow maximum delivery of oxygen. With stimulant use, any additional vessels (unsure if any do develop - suspect not) - will be vasoconstricted which will subtract from the effect of autoregulation.

Stimulant drugs do not mimic many of the (healthy) effects of exercise, so it's innacurate to assess the dangers of a drug by how much your heart rate or blood pressure increase. And in the case of cocaine, it causes a degree of vasoconstriction greater than any other stimulant and greater than any type of exercise. And vasoconstriction is what leads to a myocardial infarction (heart attack, a coronary artery so constricted that blood/oxygen cannot reach part of the heart), not merely a high heartrate.
 
Yes abra good link. It is clear despite what DARE might have told you there *ARE* chronic heart risks from crack use. In other words being a crack head carries alot more risks than trying once or twice.
What I don't know is if the risk of stroke or seizure builds (those are the three things you need to be carefull of with coke, strokes, seizures, and heart attacks) with continued use. Still I have no idea (and im not sure if there are any studies) about the relative dangers of crack and E. These are all possible side effects from E as well of course. Certainly it is all a matter of dosage. Some level of crack isn't going to kill my 80 year old grandmother...now the question is whether that is enough to get high.

Anyway while people are right about heart rate not being everything the continued existance of crack heads is pretty convincing evidence that it isn't that bad. I mean it seems clear that crack smoking doesn't decrease your risk of heart attack or stroke for continued use. Crack addicts smoke hundreds of rocks, if the risk was remotely high they just wouldn't exist (sure they don't have the best life expectancies but most of them aren't dying in their first month of crack).
Hell if a large percent of people just dropped dead after their first (reasonable) use almost no one would use it.
I really think your concern about the acute health risks should be secondary (in the case of crack) to the concern about addiction.

Phreex, I thought you would have been burned out by now...im shocked to see that you are still here after all this time.
Your response was interesting, but you must know that exercise and stimulants don't have the same action on the human body. Excersize forces the body to work for more oxygen...forcing the heart to pump blood faster from the lungs. Stimulants constrict the blood vessels....make them so small that the heart has to work twice as hard to get the same amount of blood through the passageway.
