could you grow on a ketogenic diet?

Just curious, isn't carbs not all that important when bulking but calories are? So with a ketogenic diet which is low on carbs, adequate in fat and protein, usually these foods have high calories as well. I always thought to bulk up all you need is a high calorie diet. So the ketogenic diet should work?

You need glycogen...

Of course. Also, bulk vitamin C powder is cheaper than fruits and you can load up on it. I think another vitamin that is important is K2, from meat and butter, K1 is from fruits (kiwi) and not all that important. So yes a keto diet seems like something I'm up for. What else am I missing regarding the lack of eating carbs and fruity things? I guess any food that lack carbs (i.e. ketogenic foods) would have everything a human need to function.

What I meant ongos is most people believe in order to consume naturally occurring vitamin c one would have to consume fruits. When in reality there is meat that contains it in sufficient amounts for the human body to function.

I don't think anyone can grow serious lean mass on a ketogenic diet because that diet brings your IGF-1 levels to rock bottom, and you need high levels of IGF-1 to put on mass.

ok then. non keto foods are cheaper anyway. What are some of the best bulking foods (I know, "everything")?

Also, would it make more sense to get on a ketogenic diet AFTER a cycle? Would some of the gains be lost or not really considering the ketogenic diet would be higher in protein, just less in carbs, which means fat or water gained would be lost and lean muscles would show upfront.

There's someone on another forum I participate in that stays in keto Most of the year and grows. It's cyclical keto with carb refeeds but still a keto. He runs a bit of gear though so I'm not surprised but his physique is far from stringy and flat.

is he on a long term cycle? From what I understand even if you don't eat the AAS still has great protein synthesis. I think you can appear muscular without the mass on a keto diet. I think only reason why he cycles a keto diet is because it can get expensive than cheap carbs.

He does blast and cruise. He just chooses this to keep excess water down as he's sensitive to carb spill over which I can relate to. Basically we eat a normal portion of carbs and hold water like there's no tomorrow.

By the way, I just shopped at Aldi for the first time in my life and I've never seen such healthier selection of foods and cheaper priced than Walmart! I've always shopped at Walmart and never knew of Aldi prices or quality til I read the news that they have cheaper prices than Walmart. Plus they are opening 650 additional stores in the next 5 years! I can definitely get on a ketogenic diet shopping at Aldi. Anyway, where do you guys buy groceries from?

Wallmart, much cheaper than aldi...

NZ has those stores? Maybe in NZ it's different. As far as food goes I find Aldi to be cheaper. I would only get toilet paper at Walmart and bulk fruits or fruits you have to use a scale to buy per pound cause I didn't see this at Aldi. Aldi are mostly pre-packed fruits.

Any idea where I can buy to make "bone broth"?

Interesting... I don't know if adding steroids and GH on top of a ketogenic diet doesn't grow lean muscle mass. Maybe it does.
Yeah he must at least cycle the carbs if he exercises vigorously year round. I would have a hard time believing someone was keto year round while hitting the weights hard for a long period, but such supermen must exist. There's people like hardline vegan triathletes, so lifelong keto bodybuilders mustn't be far off.

There was an article many many moons ago in an early Muscle Media 2000 that detailed a program for growing lean mass.
It was something like 2-3 weeks of high volume with a diet very low in carbs (not keto, but almost keto) , followed by 2-3 weeks of low reps and sets with a diet high in carbs. Then you repeat the whole 4-6 weeks.
I don't remember what seemed to make this work according to the magazine author. Well, almost every plan works at least for some time.

He essentially keeps muscle glycogen stores full with the refeeds while keeping the liver depleted allowing him to stay in ketosis. This allows him to maintain a decent looking physique without sacrificing much performance. I have a similar body to him in that we spillover with carbs easily which makes us hold water and blur lines and lose a good look. I look my best on low carbs unless tren is in the mix. On tren, high carbs and I look great, well better. There's other ways aside from carb manipulation to keep one looking full and vascular. I'm still playing with diet strategy to find what works best for me but every blast I find new things that work with different compounds and diet regimens. I love this sport.

Question, I don't want to gain the weight but want to run on glucose rather than ketones. I know avoid pizzas and doughy carby type foods. So if I want to run on glucose and not gain weight, would using tablespoonfuls of glucose be ideal? I won't get fat from it would I? I just want glucose as my source of energy rather than ketones. Someone here mentioned glycogen is needed to grow. What does that necessarily mean? Taking too much glucose will make one grow or what? People get fat from carby/doughy food right but not spoonful of glucose?

Great for screwing up insulin sensitivity... Your body functions better with slower released carbohydrates...

Explain? So you're saying eating regular foods like pizzas or brown rice and chicken would be ideal than tablespoons of glucose sweetener? Because it's slower released? Right? So when should one take glucose? For a quick boost of energy like pre workout? Or even post workout? I feel recovered taking glucose post workout as well. Seems as if I'm not as sore.

this isn't bro science is it? I ran a keto diet for a few months, felt and looked great but there's nothing like being able to eat anything though LOL.
