hydromorphone is a great cough suppressant i'd say even better than codeine which is usually the cough syrup doctors prescribe for cough and cold remedy

oh yeah i forgot i got that once i think it was called tussinex but hydromorphone seems to help even more than either the codeine or hydrocodone

It is a very strong opiate though, so i doubt it will be prescribed for cough when weaker opiates are so available

i read somewhere (can't remember the source) that hydromorphone was originally used as a cough suppressant

So was heroin, and morphine. Many opioids were/are rx'd for cough.
These days generally drugs like dextromethorphan are preferred over full strength opioids because there is much less dependence risk.

right i just stated this thread cause i haven't been sick in years and i smoke cigs so when i get sick i cough a lot and bad and hard and green/yellow shit comes out but i did a shot of dilaudid and coughed about 1/10th as much as w/o it

The best cough suppressant for me was kaolin + morphine mixture, or even just the simple old codeine linctus tbh. Never tried hydromorphone, not available in the UK 
Oxycodone is pretty crappy, but helps too. Not as good as codeine for stopping a cough that's for sure.

Years ago I got a REAL big bottle of vi-q-tuss,I believe it was called. I was surprised at the amt of hydrocodone it contained. That was the only time I ever got that.
More recently, I got really sick w bronchitis...super bad, had to go in for breathing treatments. I was given codeine and promethazine syrup. It did NOTHING. Anyway, saw someone besides my regular dr for that.
When I saw him next, he said that she (the dr I saw) should have known it wouldn't work since I take strong pain meds already. He said due to my tolerance I should have gotten something "much more substantial" for my cough.
To this day, wonder what the hell he'd have given me lol.
