Californians Doug and Catherine Snodgrass are suing their son’s high school for allowing undercover police officers to set up the 17-year-old special-needs student for a drug arrest.

In a video segment on ABC News, they say they were "thrilled" when their son -- who has Asperger's and other disabilities and struggled to make friends -- appeared to have instantly made a friend named Daniel.

“He suddenly had this friend who was texting him around the clock,” Doug Snodgrass told ABC News. His son had just recently enrolled at Chaparral High School.

"Daniel," however, was an undercover cop with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department who "hounded" the teenager to sell him his prescription medication. When he refused, the undercover cop gave him $20 to buy him weed, and he complied -- not realizing the guy he wanted to befriend wanted him behind bars.

In December, the unnamed senior was arrested along with 21 other students from three schools, all charged with crimes related to the two officers' undercover drug operation at two public schools in Temecula, California (Chaparral and Temecula Valley High School). This March, Judge Marian H. Tully ruled that Temecula Valley Unified School District could not expel the student, and had in fact failed to provide him with proper services.

“Within three days of the officer’s requests, [the] student burned himself due to his anxiety,” Tully said. “Ultimately, the student was persuaded to buy marijuana for someone he thought was a friend who desperately needed this drug and brought it to school for him.”

In January, a juvenile court judge decided that extenuating circumstances applied to the student's case, and ruled that he serve informal probation and 20 hours of community service, which would translate into “no finding of guilt.”

Since being allowed back to school, Snodgrass says his son has been "bullied" via suspensions and threat of expulsion. “Our son was cleared of the criminal charge, but the school continued to try and expel him,” Snodgrass said.

The Snodgrasses are now suing the school for unspecified damages. District administrators, they told ABC, should have protected their son, but instead “participated with local authorities in an undercover drug sting that intentionally targeted and discriminated against [him]."

“Sending police and informants to entrap high-school students is sick,” says Tony Newman, director of media relations at the Drug Policy Alliance. “We see cops seducing 18-year-olds to fall in love with them or befriending lonely kids and then tricking them into getting them small amounts of marijuana so they can stick them with felonies. We often hear that we need to fight the drug war to protect the kids. As these despicable examples show, more often the drug war is ruining young people's lives and doing way more harm than good.”

how the fuck do they allow this to happen? this isnt the first case like this either. fucking ridiculous that the government has the time and money to put undercover officers in high schools to set up kids and fuck their future up. un fucking believable.

Man it's not even about the drug arrests, how can you leave a mentally challenged person so betrayed. He thought he made a friend but it turned out the one person he was starting to trust was trying to arrest him. You gotta think he doesn't get much social contact. This story broke my heart.

WHAT the fuck fucking bunch of assholes its bad enough they do this to stuendts to fuck their life and future up but they had to do it to sa special needs student? then people wonder why i dont like the police fucking asses

Hey I have asperger and most of us us prefer socially challenged. I'm not condoning this police operation but I think in real life the the only thing that that would make this kid stand out would be slight akwardness and shyness .

Yea we are not mentally challanged lol. If this happened to me I would just be annoyed and angry they wasted their time with me. Though it won't happen to me, since provocation of crime is illegal here.

The boy, age 17, had been diagnosed with autism, bipolar disorder, Tourette’s syndrome and various anxiety disorders.

This kid will probably never trust a girl again. Shame, pot was probably the only thing that keeps his head level. Shit makes me sick

Oh ffs, manipulating a naive, special needs kid to hook up $20 of weed??? Wtf?? This is so fk'd up. LE really needs to step off and spend their time on real "crime".

$20 in weed.

tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars for police and court and lawyers.

hmmm.

I would have torn all involved a new asshole, you sick bastards to do that to someone so vulnerable

comment from reddit:

This happened at my piece of shit highschool. One day they just told us all to stay in our seats over the loudspeakers and we saw swat teams moving around outside the windows. They went into various classes and arrested about 15 kids. They did not get a single drug dealer, only a couple of kids who smoked weed and a couple with a few pills. My friend, a really nice smart girl who was going to college got PLACED INTO HANDCUFFS AND LEGS SHACKLES in class, arrested, and expelled.
Over the previous few months, she had sat next to a new kid in art class, some short girl with black hair. They would talk during every class and the girl would tell my friend about how much her life sucked, how she sometimes cuts herself, how smoking weed is the only way she can escape the pain of life. Generally normal conversation but sometimes adding in the depressing shit. Eventually she tries to convince my friend to get her a weed brownie. My friend tells her she can't but the girl insists, saying she really needs it. My friend, after hearing all the depressing shit about this girls life, eventually gets one from a friend and sells this girl a single weed brownie.
Turns out she was an undercover cop, along with a few other undercovers who came to our school for a couple months and convinced various kids to get them weed. And my friend was one of the kids arrested during that "swat takedown."
When the undercover testified against her in court the cop wouldn't make eye contact. She had to finish highschool at some remedial school far away for generally bad/dangerous kids. She graduated now and its all fine but damn that shit was so fucking stupid.

Actually you know what, come to think of it if I was the victim of that, I would personally with my own bare hands belt them into another reality because the sheer and utter disrespect and immorallity of going under cover into a school to try a pin some kid who has access to pot, ohhhh pot so bad, is not only a complete and major waste of resources but is also a sad excuse to be alive to be that sick minded to do such a thing. Damn right that cop wouldnt make eye contact with the victim, I hope that fucker lives for the rest of their life with the guilt that they spent their time forcible and using sympathy to go out of their way to cause an innocent person to go themselves out of their way to do something illegal, mind you obtain weed to help someones what seemingly life threatening ailemnt hello suicide is what that clearly sounded like to me is completely fucking harmless, to try and put that poor school kid away.

Sick mother fucker, what goes around comes around.

This special needs person had their life ruined. The government employee responsible has thus far escaped recourse. Now you know he probably spends his time gossiping in some bar near downtown continuing his life without any guilt.

This is one of those things we'll look back on in 50 years and think that was fucking barbaric and stupid that we ever allowed it.

There will come a day when the police, dea, etc...will be out of a job because drugs will be legal & this guy will be sitting around telling cop stories & bring up the time he set up & arrested a mentally challenged student in high school, those were the days he will say.......& they leaders of our nation wonder why society it going down hill so fast.

So sad. I knew a kid with asbergers in high school, weed was the only thing that helped him and made him happy. I don't live too far from here but I'd like to think this wouldn't happen where I live and that riverside area is just backwards as fuck but who knows.
