Benzos Contrast constipation of Benzos vs Opioids

I get it.

Im currently writing a post about how to deal with constipation. People clearly are clueless about it and are using laxatives incorrectly. I’m calling it “Everyone poops, except for opioid addicts.”
I'll make sure to refer the professor of Gastroenterology at the top 3 university treating me to your post so he can learn to treat patients properly. Thanks so much.

Opioids 100% I legit checked my poop to see if it had glass in it as it tore my asshole so much on DHC, felt like I was pooping razor blades, I nearly fainted

I've definitely never had any sort of constipations on benzo's, even when I was taking 12mg Xanax a day. I don't think benzo's cause constipation. I've never heard of that.
I actually have never had constipation from opioids either, not even on very high doses, In fact, for some reason codeine (only codeine) gives me extreme histaminergic reactions: I took 300mg once (no tolerance at the time, though). All of my skin turned red and I was bleeding all over from clawing at my skin. Never felt itchiness like it it was like torture. My face swelled up, especially around my eyes, My blood pressure was so low I was stuck lying on the floor (couldn't sit up or even lift my head; had to shout to my parents for an ambulance). Sorry, went off-topic a bit there, but the interesting symptom I got along with the others I mentioned: I got very severe diarrhoea. Like, bowel cramping and copious amounts of watery diarrhoea every 5-10 minutes.
So yeah, I'm weird. Codeine gives me the shits big time.

I get that on opioids too, codeine is the worse but recently got it on a different opioid called tapentadol and I end up using my hair brush to scratch my skin, and my legs are now bruised again, big scratch marks too, it put me off getting anymore, the worse was oxynorm and very high doses of codeine which didn't even make me high just so itchy I ran to Boots for anti itching cream and smothered it all over my legs before I even left the chemist haha, I scratched skin off my foot oh and on Oxy I scared my wrist, scratched so much a scan came and now I have a scar to remind me everytime I see my wrist, but it happened only after using it fine for 10 days, weird

Strange you get the shits on it, not heard that before

There is no offence meant to you, I was shocked at even @negrogesic not being aware but as he said, it’s not something that’s at the top of someone’s mind when they are on that many opioids.

Honestly, if movicol isn’t working then you’re not using it right or you don’t realise how long it actually takes to work (which can be 48 hours).

If you wanna show that Gastroenterologist then I’d be more than happy. I hope he learns something from it. Im putting a good amount of time into it.

Another specialist gave me benzos which seem to actually relax the muscles and spasm in the pelvis enough to let the stool go through, but there is the paradoxical side effect of constipation (on paper) so I'm not really sure if it's going to be a net improvement or not.
I suffer from every form of IBS, A-D. I am prescribed .5mg alprazolam tablets to take after meals to alleviate pain. They're the only medication (aside from opioids) that relieves this pain. Benzos don't constipate me in the slightest, I took 11.5mg of etizolam last night and I still had a regular BM this morning, no constipation.

Thanks this was somewhat reassuring. I definitely feel better while the peak effect of the benzo happens (constipation feeling is gone). And my bowel movement doesn't seem any harder to pass than it does when I'm not on any drug.

I definitely have some kind of chronic constipation but it's also confused by the fact that I have pain due to the pelvic floor and rectal muscle issues (PFD) that feels very similar to constipation but may not be constipation per se.

I rarely have abdominal pain though. Maybe 1 to 3 times per week and not too severe, so I'm feeling like I don't have IBS even though it has been suggested that I may have IBS-C to me. If I had to put money on it I would say all the GI problems stem from my pelvic floor issues which are confirmed.

I have long time experience with both xanax, klonopin and various opioids.

Opioid constipation is much more severe, since it's mode of action has an effect in our gut.
From what I remember of in a pharmacological sense, benzo's should not cause any constipation that I'm aware of. Maybe a slight slowing of metabolism due to sedation?

I've been on buprenorphine and clonazepam for years, and although I'm mostly tolerant to bupes constipating effect now, there was a time where taking Miralax nightly was absolutely necessary to keep me from getting a bowel impaction.

I think you don't have anything to fear and like what another user mentioned, if you're some one who has stomach pain along with constipation, a low dose of benzo can really relax your muscles & help with that, especially a benzo with muscle relaxing properties, like clonazepam. Not so sure about xanax (alprazolam) but the other user says that's what they take and it helps them.

The real dangers of combining an opioid and a benzo lies in it's ability to cause respiratory depression, but as long as you're getting your meds from a doctor and not being totally irresponsible, it's completely fine to mix an opioid & benzo once you've established tolerances to the medications.
