contacts

I wear contacts and I have worn them since I was 14. Im now 22. I have worn glasses since I was around 10. Someday ill get the laser surgery, im just waiting more years to see how people do after long periods of time of having the procedure done.

I wear my contacts way too much, instead of two weeks I really stretch it to maybe a month and a half. I never wash my hands before taking them out, I never rinse them..just stick em straight into the holder. I suck.

However I am grateful I have the same prescription in both eyes, it really saves me money sinze I can buy one box for $30 vs. $60.

I'm sorry to hear that faithfully dangerous, I didn't mean to come off as complaining. I made this thread because I wanted to know what contacts were like before I started wearing them. I didn't mean to offend anyone...sorry :(

when I say "legally blind" I was told it meant that for driving purposes, you are "legally blind". (Unless of course you are actually blind )

because there is no way in hell I could drive a car without glasses, hell I couldn't even manually unlock a car or turn it on without glasses.

no way, you didnt offend me, i just wanted to make sure people knew they were lucky :) kinda like when someone goes to eat somewhere and they complain about the food... at least you HAVE food!!! :)

I am guilty of all those things too.

Lately though, I try to be much better about washing my hands before taking them out. Especially after a long day of waitressing in which I have my hands all over nasty gross stuff ewwww :\

If I put contacts in, and I don't wash my hands.. It takes me an extra 10 minutes because my eyes get all irritated and red and watery.

I like having contacts... I'm -2.5 in one eye, and -2.75 in the other, so I guess it's not too bad. I like having glasses around those times that my eyes need a little break.

If I wear them for too long straight though, my eyes get kinda stiff and when I look up it hurts because I don't use those muscles very much. *shrugs* maybe I'm just insane

but yeah.. contacts freaking rock other than that!

I used to wear contacts every day, but it's too expensive now. So i've gotten used to wearing glasses.

I used to have the fortnightly ones but after a few years i started getting infections almost all the time. My optomitrist said i had an allergy to the new solution that was being used and changed me to dailies.
The dailies are only a few dollars more expensive and they are *Sooooo* much better for your eyes. My eyes so much healthier after i started using the dailies. I wouldn't even consider going back to fortnightlies now.

Just the thought of going to parties/clubs/all the pollen in them from spring/grubs and germs
EWWW
eye infections from contact lenses can leave you blind. saving a few dollars isnt worth your sight...

froggygirl - if you leave contacts in too long your eyes do dry up.
The longer (in terms of years) you wear contacts, the less compatible your eyes are too them.
For example, my bro-in-law has been wearing them for 15 years (not every day) and he can now only wear them for a few hours at a time.

Also, contacts deprive your eyes of oxygen, that's why it is very bad to wear contacts all day and all night (for example, if you go out clubbing after wearing them all day).

I know this is an oldie

what brand does everyone use, I am looking for new ones

I use focus monthlies. They work pretty good for me. Never have any irritation until the contacts get too old, and never any infections.

i use biomedics clear, cuz im allergic to the colored ones they have oddly.

my eye doc told me not to use freshlook anymore because their technology has not been updated in awhile which results in less crisp vision.

I prefer my contacts, even though they can be quite literally a pain! I have to use the toric lenses for astigmatism. They are ridiculously expensive (130 per lens!), and if they aren't weighted right the world becomes a blur (which seems to happen a lot-- especially when trying to order from fast food menus!!!).
When I first got my lenses and glasses it was WEIRD to put my glasses on-- I got the whole "fishbowl" effect for a couple weeks. It's completely gone now, so don't worry it should subside soon enough.

I tried soft contacts about 8 years ago and they started to build up deposits within 15mins. The eye doctor said I shouldn't get them.

Has anything changed over those past 8yrs? Do you think I should give them another try?

deposits definitely dont build up in 15 mins! Try em out next time you go to the eye doctor.

I like having my nerdy glasses AND my contacts. Options are everything :D

I hate glasses. Been using contacts for 5 years now and never had an eye infection or any major irritiation (knock on wood). I use frequency 55 monthly's (both -2.00) having them in is second nature, I don't even feel them. I take em out at night and give my eyes a good few hours to "breathe". Given the option I'd never go back to glasses.

I actually came in to start a thread about this very question - has anyone else been wearing contact lenses for a long period of time (say, 10-15 years or more) and only begun having troubles with them recently?

I've been wearing contacts for nearly 13 years and used to have no problems with them at all, but in the last 12 months or so I've noticed them irritating my eyes a lot more than they used to. When I was younger I would occasionally forget to take them out at night and never got any bother from them, but the odd time it happens now I wake up with them itching like crazy. Other than that they're pretty much fine, just maybe a little more sensitive than they used to be.

It's making me paranoid that my eyes are starting to 'reject' them or something, particularly as for the last couple of years I've been wearing my glasses pretty much permanently (out of lazyness more than anything) and have gotten it in my head that doing so has made my eyes less tolerant to contacts. I like wearing my glasses, but I'm -6.5 and can't see anything without them, so having contacts when I'm at the beach or playing sport rocks.

So...has anyone had to stop wearing their contacts due to long term use (without added hygene/infection issues)? Does this really happen, or is it just a myth?

my boyfriend has been wearing contacts for over 15 yrs. He didnt even own a pair of glasses till recently and thats just cuz i said they look good on him. his eyes are fine.

My friend Eileen is -9.5 and -9.0.. i started out at -1.25 & -1.5.. i am now up to -2.25 and -2.75 :/

I wear O2ptix lenses. They are 2 week lenses. I used to wear Encore monthly's which i actually liked better. The O2ptix seem to make my eyes feel dryer when i take them out.. but it might just be that my eyes arent; forming the callous that they were forming under my old ones.

These contacts are approved for 7 days of continuous wear too.. which is good for me... even tho after fucking up my eyesight with contacts I hardly ever forget to take them out every night.

I hate to wear my glasses. They give me a headache, and since i am nearsighted, when i was in college i would get MASSIVE headaches because what i was trying to read faraway (the board) i couldnt see unless i moved my head up and down like i was having spasms. lol

I dont need my contacts/glasses for anything close to me... but i find my contacts sooo sooo soooo much more convienient and comfortable for my lifestyle.

I am actually getting Lasik with a close friend of mine. I am a perfect candidate for it, and i get a lifetime commitment gaurentee.... if my eyesight starts to go again from now until i die.. i get the surgery redone for free :D they also do it free if i start to get cataracts and that hurts my vision!

rock on!
