coming off codeine: what am I getting myself into?

Over 15 years ago, I was a heroin addict and kicked it. I was doing over a gram a day, while living in Asia: it was the good stuff and coming off it was long and painful.

Recently (about 3 months ago) I started taking Tylenol 3 for pain. The most I was taking was 12 a day, but I've now been consistently taking 6 a day-3 in the morning, 3 in the evening.
I'm out this morning. I REALLY dont want to get more and wonder what kind of WD I will be dealing with. Wife doesnt know about this and actually never knew me when I was a real dope fiend. I wonder if the WD will be manageable enough that I can just be in bed with the "flu" for a couple of days, or am I in for a roller coaster ride like I faced with the heroin WD.
Thoughts anyone?

yeah WD shouldnt be too bad your not taking much, and they are weak but might feel sick like others said just tell her you think you got the flu lol

It shouldn't be too bad pal, you're doses are not outside the normal range. Try these following tips to ease the WDs as much as possible. I feel for you, I've been through my 'home detox' too many times to count, and it's shit.

  1. OTC antihistamines such as diphenhydramine and promethazine (OTC in the UK). They will ease the rhinorrea and insomnia, as well as the anxiety if you take a dose around 100mg.
  2. Keep very well hydrated. Any vomiting and excess urine can cause dehydration which can make you feel 100x worse.
  3. 5-HTP and Valerian can help, they can be picked up in lots of stores and are good herbal remedies to help with the anxiety and depression.
  4. Try to taper your dose if you can, it'll help, not much, but a bit.
  5. Get lots of support from a friend or loved one if possible.
  6. Good luck!

It shouldnt be bad at all. I have been taking tylenol #4 for over 2 years and have gone through withdrawals a couple times. If you take immodium it will help. You might only be on the toilet for a bit but prob not much. You may also just feel a little weird in the head but thats about it. you really are not taking much at all. Good luck

Nothing like heroin or methadone.....

I would switch places with you in a heartbeat......and thank god for the blessing....

I never did heroin but I have done codeine & can tell you it shouldnt be too bad. Like the other guys have said, just tell your wife you have the flu. Vicodin was the 1st pill I ever took but I always enjoyed several 50mg Lertus CD codeine pills. Those things made the summer fun.

wow thanks so much all of you! I am at the end of day 2, and as predicted, nothing compared to what i went through 13 years ago...
I've been taking small doses of imodium and occasionally taking some Benylyn, but i find the Benylyn makes me more loopy than not. My arthritis and bursitis in both my shoulders is killing me, but i knew this would happen.
the only danger i can see with this "undramatic" wd is that it's easy to think--hey this is no big deal, I can do it again anytime! so far, resisting that urge pretty well.

I took 150 mg of Lyrica about 2 hours ago and I feel like my chest and my head are about to explode! Debating to call ambulance. :(

If you're not feeling quite right, I would recommend going to the emergency room. I never did Lyrica & dont know what it does or what its used for.

ok...most of the evil has passed. still feeling groggy but very hungry so eating some white rice.
Lyrica is prescribed for fybromyalgia, nerve pain and a few other things. I got it for carpal tunnel in my hand and arm. I didnt really like how it affected me the first time I tried it (too dizzy and not in control), but it seems that it's a pretty good aid for opiate withdrawal symptoms. there are a few posts on this forum re: lyrica and withdrawal. I thought i'd give it a try tonight and I stayed within initial dosage recommendations (75 mg-150mg) but it did a number on me. and scared my wife :(
anyhoo, I am feeling somewhat better and not in need of ER.
thanks......

I didn't read the whole thread, but it sounds like a walk in the park. I would even quit cold turkey. You'll be feeling better in no time :)
