How do you feel about this?

AP said:
DENVER (AP) — Colorado health officials want to ban many edible forms of marijuana, including brownies, cookies and most candies, limiting legal sales of pot-infused food to lozenges and some liquids.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment told marijuana regulators that many forms of edible marijuana "are naturally attractive to children" and violate the law's "requirement to prevent the marketing of marijuana products to children."

The recommendation was obtained by The Associated Press in advance of a third and possibly final workgroup meeting Monday to draw up rules for identifiable markers or colors for edible marijuana products so they won't be confused with regular foods.

The health department's recommendation, sent to the regulators Oct. 14, would effectively take most forms of edible marijuana off store shelves. The final decision will be made by the Department of Revenue's Marijuana Enforcement Division, which oversees retail marijuana sales.

Lawmakers have ordered state pot regulators to require pot-infused food and drink to have a distinct look when they are out of the packaging. The order came after concerns about the proliferation of pot-infused treats that many worry could be accidentally eaten by children.

Statewide numbers are not available, but one hospital in the Denver area has reported nine cases of children being admitted after accidentally eating pot. It is not clear whether those kids ate commercially packaged pot products or homemade items such as marijuana brownies. The Health Department's recommendation would apply only to products sold commercially, including a form of liquid pot called a tincture that can be added to foods.

The Health Department's recommendation is one of several made to marijuana regulators. The advocacy group Smart Colorado wants to see a requirement that edible versions of marijuana be colored, marked or stamped to indicate they contain the drug.

The marijuana industry opposes a ban on most pot products. A spokesman for Dixie Elixirs, which makes marijuana-infused sodas and mints, said Monday that the rules go too far and may not be able to keep pot-infused foods out of children's hands.

I think the ban is pointless since if people really want to make edible cannabis/hash prepared foods they'll just do it at home. Unfortunately it's not always that easy to gauge the effects of edibles this way.

Yup. So would something like this breed a policy banning people who have bud making their own edibles?

Whole fucking thing is ridiculous imho. I wonder how many kids have issues with alcohol/prescriptions/other poisons compared to edible jelly beans and peanut butter cookies? And leaving it to people to do on their own rather than just put some standardized processes in place instead of banning them outright, well, ugh...

We make our own edibles here, yeah they can be so strong they couch lock you for ages. Once we had a friend give us a cookie of hers and we bought it home and it was in a hand bag on the floor for 5 minutes and the dog had got into the hand bag and took the cookie out which was wrapped in plastic, the dog tore off the plastic and ate the cookie. The dog was mega stoned for many hours. We learnt a huge lesson. We dont have kids, but same principle I guess, as my dog will eat anything food related that it can get into (just about, maybe a few exceptions).

You do need a fair bit of bud to make a decent batch, we usually use 1 or 2 ounces of good stuff for our batches. But then you have quite alot of cookies and they last for ages.

I am against those knock off look Candy look alikes though. For one its legal now so the whole trademark infringement makes it look like we are stuck in an outlaw mindset

How much you want to bet those things fucking end in some kids halloween bag this year? Community should get behind clear packaging regulations if they want to save edibles. I don't eat weed but when I have LSD candy its locked up.

Normally I'm with you. BUT:
1) kids sneak sweets all the time. The liquids (sodas or whatever) are generally very effective for a lot of people. Lozenges and other non-snack foods would also help to prevent accidents among adults. I think the ones they're allowing to stay are very good.
2) You aren't forced to smoke anything. No one is making you
3) You can still buy oil or weed and cook with it. Fuck, your own food will probably be better! plus I imagine weed infused cooking products will still be available. So I really do think that this isn't as big a deal
4) To make it look better to non smokers in other states: 100% of every negative news story about death or freakout related to weed I've seen (suicide and murder are the death related, not that there was any provable connection it just looks bad) were tied in to edibles. With fewer bad stories coming out of CO, the more people in other states will get behind national legalization

**edited to make me sound less like I'm pulling shit out of my ass

Do you have kids iam?

Also check this out.. these are actually much more dangerous.. why are they not being banned

Good point. The dish washer pellets I use are wrapped in plastic and smell like apple, I actually like the smell, each time I goto put one in the dishwasher I give it a good sniff ;-p

This is going to be quite off topic. But it proposes psychological questions that may be very intertwined with drug prohibition and the results it achieves.

Growing up I had a bunch of family dogs.. these dogs where always fed in a controlling manor. That is they were fed a set amount at a certain times of the day. I noticed that other families would leave as much food for their dogs out as they wanted at any time.

When I was able to have my own dogs, I decided to give them as much food as they desired from the very begining of their lives. All the dogs i have ever shared time with have never gotten fat, never over eaten . They just ate whenever they were hungry. It was just not something they ever even worried about and it was not a big deal to them.

I met o woman who also had a dog. We fell in love and ended up moving in with each other. Her dog had been raised on a controlled feeding schedule. For this reason I could no longer just leave my dogs food out all the time. If I did her dog would eat it all at once.

Fast forward a little bit. No my dog has become what her dog was. He is now required to be on a controlled feeding schedule. He breaks into food bins and has snuck food untill he was becoming obviously obese and we caught on. This is a dog that was allowed all the food he wanted for the first seven years of his life and was at no time obese. pretty interesting right.

So I saw this.. then i applied it to the raising of my child.. He has been allowed to consume and choose and hold all his own candy and soda since he has gained enough maturity to make a good descion (6 years old). before that he was monitored, but still allowed to voice his desires and usually was granted his choice and desires.

When it appeared he was making a poor choice I calmly explained why, in down to earth real reasons why he may consider a different choice.

Fast forward again.. he is now nine.. He still is asked what he wants to drink with meals.. sometimes he picks a soda.. many times he will go for days without even requesting one. He is given all the candy he asks for, within reason, and he is given control over it. He eats it at a very acceptable level (way better then me:\) and can has substantial portions of bags of candy that he has been in total control over for weeks? (if i dont eat it first:sus:)

So whats the deal here, he likes candy.. but its no big deal to him as its always available and in his control. He likes soda, but often chooses juice, milk, water over it tot he point that its the least common thing he drinks.

Dogs are the same way.. does the mind fixate and copulse over things its limited or prevented from having.. if it something like this then does prohibition end up even having much worse consequences then we already know?

I would love to hear exploration of the never paradigm, but not in a way that disrupts this thread.

I wonder if cannabutter would remain legal? If so, I think this makes a lot of sense because it is an unnecessary liability to sell the drug in a form easily identified by a child as candy. If you want to take the cannabutter and cook it into brownies yourself, that's fine... Distributing as brownies though, I can see the argument that it's asking for trouble...

I get the enforcement of the law but whether people buy the brownies or make them themselves is irrelevant.
How many of you as a kid searched through your parents room out of curiosity? Maybe found their porn collection or what not.
I think the safe thing is not simply not make brownies or have them at home when you have children who are at that curious age.
This of course is more a public education issue and as such I don't think enforcement of a law will help, although considering how much work it is to make edibles opposed to buying them I do see this law as actually reducing accidental dosage of children.
Buy some BHO and put it in a capsule if you require edibles imo

Oh no!! Everyone is going to have to learn to cook!! :(

Who cares... Some of the pictures of edibles I see from shops/dispensaries online of their edibles are tiny little bite sized tarts with 200mg THC. Every food you can think of. 200mg per 5 gummy bears, really? Is that necessary at all? If I had 200mg of THC (lets be real, if we are talking those gummies it would be 2000mg!) when I was a little kid and then went out for a bike ride I could have fucking killed myself.

I would love to be able to walk to a shop and buy some lozenges and some butter. If you really like eating THC gummies then make them. Tarts or brownies wouldnt be hard.

Everyone was asking for cannabis to be regulated like tobacco is. If the tobacco industry was able to put nicotine in gummy bears they would but nobody wants kids taking drugs. Maybe I'm getting old.

I think they need to present some kind of statistics to show that children everywhere are accidentally eating pot. If it's a few uncommon instances then this law is bunk and is just another way to criminalize pot in a legalized state.

Conservatives need to stop trying to shirk laws that were made in good faith.
