Colonization of Mars

Strongly disagree
So i'm listening to 'Boomin back atcha' by Freq Nasty and its got me thinking about how a while back George W. Bush stated we could colonize Mars in the near future.

i think that this could mark the end of humanity it this were to happen in the next 50-100 years or so.

It got me thinking of the cold war, when America and the former USSR were making all these nuclear weapons and whatnot, and the cold war ended shortly after they realised they had made enough weapons to destroy the Earth several times over (i know there were other factors, but this is a major reason). So, when they realised they had nowhere left to run to if they detonated all these weapons of mass destruction, they disarmed. See where im going with this?

Hypothetically, if America for exmaple, had a half decent colony set up on Mars (one with a re-newable source of oxygen, food, and water), if another cold war were to arise, whats to stop the USA from sending nukes all over the place? If you say "bullshit" to this, stop and think "Would Goerge Bush nuke the middle east if he could run to another planet and start the human race over again with republican ideals?"

The answer (imho) is yes.

With mankinds hatred of itself (largely caused by, but not limited to - religion) it would be unwise to even think about starting another Earth-like planet in which we could colonize. I believe the human race has another couple of hundred years of evolution towards a more pacifist society before Mars should be inhabited by us. If not the human race could be doomed to repeat its mistakes and it risks possible extinction.

Or maybe i've smoked too much and im paranoid?
Thoughts?

I think you've smoked too much and are paranoid. I don't think any country or anyone would destroy earth because their own country can survive on mars. It would be stupid to do such a thing and there is no real point behind it either.

I do however think Mars will be coloninated as soon as they can, almost makes me sad that I won't see it all unfold. In many years to come how far off will we be from Star Trek and those programs? Not too far I don't think.

If anything I would say think about when the Britsh started colonies over here and then tried to rule them from afar. Earth vs Mars 8o

Looking back, my analogy is a bad one. But how can you say :

" It would be stupid to do such a thing and there is no real point behind it either."

When ethnic cleansing still occurs and corrupt people are still able to get into power? Hitler wasnt all that long ago, He had strong views on what the human race should look like and what religon we should be practising. OK, so he was extremely patriotic and most probably wouldn't have taken a scorched earth tactic, however, what would have happened if the option instead of world domination, to simply destroy the majority of life and start over?

Similary, if a white supremist (spl?) got into power and started setting up colonies with only white catholics (only a hypothetical peeps:)), this is a distinct possiblity as only one or two countries could afford to do this, and private corps owned by men with old money. What then?

Just on the aspect of the possibility of colonization. How long ago did people theorize this and hope for this with the moon? Its going to a be a long long while.

Well, I personally think that would be pretty much impossible. There isn't a button in the White House that says NUKE WORLD on it, I'm sure there are ALOT of people involved in the process of getting a nuclear weapon up going towards it's target. How many of these people are going to be willing to send nuclear bombs all over the planet for no reason other than their president said to?

Anyway, if we ever colonized mars it wouldn't be like some kind of Sci-Fi movie where there's a big bubble full of Oxygen and people just live like on Earth. I'm willing to bet if we ever colonized another planet 100% of the people there would all have a degree in some highly technical field, with maybe a few doctors and other needed professions thrown in. Not exactly the kind of people who would welcome a George Bush into their colony. In fact, if something like this ever happened I'm willing to bet whoever was on their way to Mars would be assasinated as soon as they arrived.

Whoever mentioned Earth vs Mars, unless we obtained instant or speed of light travel, how many people are going to give up years of their life just to go and fight a war, then spend more years getting back home? Maybe it's not that far to Mars I'm just using this as an example of the posibilty of planetary war. Oh, and if we did end up with speed of light travel, the faster you move the faster time moves, you'd end up back home on Mars with everyone you ever knew dead and any money you might have made from joining the army completley worthless from inflation.

Now that I think about it, if we ever established a colony on mars that was self-reliant indefinatley I think they'd op to NEVER let anyone from Earth into their colony and would rather rebuild their own society. Seeing as how most of the people there would be very well educated, this might not be such a bad idea. Then again, absolute power absolutley corrupts or so the saying goes. You might end up with a Mars cult.

I think we should colonize Venus first. Its surface temperature is around 600 degrees, its air is toxic gas and acid rains from the sky.

In other words, it's kind of like LA. :)
